Trent Johnson was worse than Ray. I mean recruiting sucked, his brand of basketball sucked, won-loss record sucked. Even the home grown talent was running to get out of the state when Trent was head coach.
He has beat Ray head to head two years running.

Rick Ray is the hire you make when you fire your most successful coach in recent history. Stans may have been underachieving but MSU better hope Howland can get them back to consistent success

Rod Barnes was a bad hire because they just gave it to an Evans assistant.
Not as terrible of a hire as you'd think.
Rod's problem was that he couldn't adapt to the game and fell behind.

David Hobbs at Alabama was pretty damn bad. He took what Newton and Sanderson had built over the span of 2 decades and completely dismantled it in the matter of a few years.

I really don't think you guys realize how bad Ray was.
Mississippi State had only one losing season in the 20 years prior to his hiring he had 3 in his 3 years as HC
Ray was 37-61 (13-41 in the sec) the guys some of you are listing made ncaa tournaments. Rick Ray had 4 road wins in 3 years

Tony Barbee was complete Shite at AU. I would put him on a worst hire list.

Rick Ray is on his own level similar to Ed Orgeron and Curley Hallman in football

frick you. Auburn people think Curley was the greatest LSU coach EVAR.

quote:I could see a fair comparison of Ray and Orgeron as they were both unknowns and essentially came out of nowhere when they were hired. Curly Hallman was quite successful at USM and should have been a good hire - on paper. Turned out that he was in over his head at a big time program but you really can't know that going in. You know what they say about hindsight.

But Ray was only a place holder until we could out live the Stansbury mess. Now don't go saying you thought it was a mistake to get rid of Stansbury when we did. You might have been the last to come around but even you admitted it was time for Stansbury to go. Remember that?

Tony Barbee.
I have to agree with this, though he showed promise at UTEP. He was just a disaster at AU.

Shouldn't you be out planting okra? It's that time of year.

that's a bunch of clinkers.
John Guthrie at Georgia, Richard Schmidt at Vanderbilt,Wade Houston at Tennessee, Ed Murphy at Ole Miss, Lee Hunt at Ole Miss, John Lott at Florida.
He's up there, but hard to say 'the worst.'

Nah, John Calipari. He can't get any of his players to stay in his program.

Because none of that was the previous coaches fault for leaving the program in a terrible situation.
Not defending Ray, but to still be so blind as to why we fell so far so fast is insane.

Kim Anderson is the right answer. Hadn't been a D1 assistant for like 17 years and had zero D1 HC experience. We hired a D2 coach over numerous winning D1 coaches and promptly cut our win total by more than half. His recruiting is the equivalent of a low major and doesn't appear to be getting any better. He will surpass Ray if we give him the time.
