I saw Thomas play. Your post is a joke. You showed your lack of knowledge.

He would have everything available to him that they do. Do you think he wouldn't take advantage of it? You must think he'd forget how to play football. They'd still have fits blocking the man and if you think differently,

Smarter? Where do you get that? Better? Talent and ability is talent and ability, then and now. There are no Offensive Linemen, then or now, as fast and quick as Thomas was.

Enlightened? WTF is that? Chase Young has never played a down in the NFL and never dominated a game in college like Derrick Thomas I've watched both of them so I have perspective you do not. He hopes he has anywhere near the career Thomas did in the NFL.

You are talking out of your arse about DT. he played in the modern NFL not the Rocky 3-packs-a-day Bleier days.

I know I don’t agree with you much But Thomas would dominate in any time period! Your Bama youngster there shows how stupid he really is

Derrick Thomas could single handily take over and win games like he did against Penn St in 1988. He was special for sure.

Other than Charles Woodson
I think Hugh Green was the closest defensive player to winning the Heisman from 1980 To now

ETA: it was actually Te’o

Suh finished top 5 in 2009. But, yes, Teo was the closest to win it since Woodson.

DT finished 10th. He absolutely should have been higher. Bobby Humphrey finished with more votes in '87 than DT received in '88. DT wasn't even the highest defensive player in the voting that year, Deion Sanders was. Also, there were some other really good players that season: Barry Sanders (all time best season as a RB), Peete, and Aikman with Steve Walsh and Major Harris (both really good college QBs) as well. But, DT was second best player in the country that year and deserved more recognition at the time

Derrick Thomas may have been the most dominant defensive player ever. Pretty close between him and Reggie White, who was pretty damn near unblockable.

Derrick Thomas would be a joke in the NFL today. They didn't have good nutrition back then, didn't eat right. They didn't have modern day weight training regimens.

Chase Young is ten times the player Thomas was just because he was born in a more enlightened and advanced era.

This is ridiculous for a couple of reasons. First, it is a generation ago not 60 years ago in a segregation era league. The biggest and best players were playing as they are today.

Thomas' talent and athleticism are among the best all time. Place him into today's "era" with better nutrition and weight training and you don't think he excels as well? He'd be running laps around Young. Moreover, place Young in Thomas' "era" and he is just as likely to be sitting on the bench as a tub of lard with all of benefits you mentioned removed.

Also, you can't hypothetically move the player for comparison and not also assume that all of those external and societal factors contributing to speed, power and talent wouldn't also transfer with the player.

The funny thing is this post.

quote:

Players today are better, stronger, faster, smarter, and hit harder and play stronger than those old dinosaurs

It's flat out stupid statement. You could take 2-3 steps and hit the QB. DB's were coached to separate the player from the ball. Do we really need to go into the steroid era of the NFL?

Go watch the 1994 Chiefs vs 49ers game. You don't think those guys could play today? Whatever. Best regular season game ever IMO. Montana vs his old team and the star was actually DT. 3 sacks, 1 a safety, against the 49ers and wreaked havoc all game.

***just realized it was a response to a troll.

Here is a list of Defensive Linemen who were Heisman Finalists. I don't see anything on the page about linebackers, but his Wikipedia page says DT finished 10th in the Heisman race.

The players that would have a hard time I think would be offensive linemen. As great as John Hannah was, he was only about 6'2 or so and played at about 265 or 270. Of course this was the 70's, well before Thomas' era.

I like to think about past players in sports and could they play today. I think baseball would be the sport in which they could. Babe Ruth for example or Lou Gehrig, sure they'd have to adjust some but a ballplayer is a ballplayer.

SOME of the older era football players could I think. Dick Butkus is plenty big enough, physical and mobile enough, he'd damn sure have to tone it down. Jim Brown? Any Era. Some of the older QB's would probably thrive now.

Look at DT's combine numbers...his 40 time was good...but if you took his 10 yard split...it is in the top 4.1% of all NFL combine attendees, and the top 5% of all players his size...and this was straight out of college...he got bigger, stronger and faster once he was in the league.

Derrick Thomas was one of the greatest pass rushers in SEC history. That '88 game against us was downright brutal. I wasn't sure Tommy Hodson would survive the entire game. Not sure Tommy was, either....
