That does make me feel old. But I've long passed the feeling of existential dread of death and look forward to being done with this earthly existence, so the passage of time doesn't bother me much any more.

Not really...since they went 13-0 in 2004 and didn't get a chance to play for the NC, and 11-0 in 1993 but weren't eligible to play for it.

I'm sure if Georgia had any undefeated seasons between 1980 and now, it would have taken off some of the heat. You guys were so close in 2002.

Auburn also won the title in ‘83, ‘93, and ‘04 FYI

Nothing is going to change...1980 is it for you.

Unlike UGA, Auburn was screwed out of several opportunities that they deserved to be NC. UGA screws itself out of NCs.

Yall are free to use 2020 as a reply to all Alabama fans. We can handle it.

That's definitely got some truth to it. The joke kind of went from "LOL no title 1957" to "LOL even when you go undefeated nobody respects you enough to let you play for a title". Either way, jokes were made. As they were the "Dead Bear" jokes about Alabama, the Florida jokes about Tennessee, etc.

However, the obsession with national titles that people have today didn't exist with very many fanbases before 2000. Alabama did because of the past, but were pretty routinely mocked for it.

- Tennessee wanted to beat Florida, all the additional things really didn't matter until they beat Florida
- Georgia wanted to win the East (but, like Tennessee, really they just wanted to beat Florida)
- LSU just wanted not to suck
- Auburn wanted to beat Alabama and Georgia and get to Atlanta

The entire outlook on seasons was much more about rivalry games, winning the conference, etc. The national title was like a "if we look up and we have a shot in November then it becomes a goal" type thing.

Before 2010 fans of programs other than Auburn just said '2004' to Auburn fans.

Not with the number on undefeated seasons Auburn has. We have a lot more championships than we claim

I'll have every other program's last title on permanent copy and paste for all my Rant accessible devices if 1980 gets broken.

Georgia fans are acknowledging that it may never happen!

About which part, Harvey?

Nobody is recognizing the UPI. And NOBODY believes Alabama was the best team in 1941 except the sidewalk trash like you who wear the Got 17 t-shirts or whatever number

Alabama only claims that one to beef up the resume of Frank Thomas.

Maybe...But if they wanted to do that, that have a better option with 1945. Did the athletic department history buff that inflated their total from 6 to 11 in the early 80s not see 1945 sitting there, ready for the picking? Why go with 1941?

No. Because Auburn fans never ran around with inbred aids, acting like they have the history of Notre Dame, the win/loss record of Michigan and the trophy case of Alabama like the Dog fans aka Ed O's bitch does...

That was more because of that "People's Championship" nonsense and the REALLY terrible parade they put together than because of their season.

Because no one wants to dispute Army's claim that year, for two reasons:

1. They were, objectively, ABSURDLY good against a tough schedule
AND
2. The US had just won the war. Trying to take anything away from Army's claim would end up worse optics than the 1941 nonsense.

I definitely don't understand the "need" to beef up Frank Thomas' resume. He has a title from his 10-0 team in 1930. (I also wonder if someone decided to edit his personal page, as he's credited with a title in 1945 and #1 ranking, which is NOT reflected on the page for the actual 1945 Alabama Football team).

A seemingly forgotten Frank Thomas season was 1937, when Alabama won the SEC, went undefeated in the regular season, but had their one and only loss in the Rose Bowl.

As this was prior to the AP giving out national championships after the bowl season, it would seem that Bama would have been in a proper position to get the AP title that year, but they didn't even rank #2 that season let alone #1. (They finished #4 in the poll.)

Probably because Georgia claimed 1942 based on a Houlgate poll...
