Might be a move to bolster the conference image academically
It will never happen. The original schools have improved greatly in academics, and adding Texas A&M and Missouri helped. We now have 7 top 100 schools while the Big 12 has 4. Still, however, we're viewed as inferior to everyone. Nothing's going to change that

Are they any worse than state?
We are about even in football
17 bowls for us 18 for UVA
State has the baseball advantage
UVA advantage in basketball

Cultural fit works both ways.

Do they wear seersuckers up there?

Everything I've seen or heard points to UVA in the B1G -- where they are a perfect cultural fit outside of baseball.
Not like they'd have to swallow their football pride with little brother in the SEC -- They've already been doing that for the past 20 years anyway.

SEC had 2 AAU schools prior to 2010
SEC has 4 AAU schools now
SEC would have 6 adding UNC and UVA
6 > 4 > 2 in case math is not your best subject
6 of 16 AAU schools = 37.5%
2 of 12 AAU schools = 16.7%
Doubling your percentage of AAU schools in under 5 years would be a very big deal.

UVA's top choice is the Big10

Sounds familiar.

Yeah but the b1g wants UVA.

Says a bunch of B1G and B12 bloggers. Who really knows what is actually going on behind closed doors.
Slive is a UVA alumni so who knows?

Luckily there isn't a Nebraska on the east coast to snag their invite while they're trying to negotiate.

My question is WHY?
Just look at the last 2 additions to the SEC and it's not difficult to figure out what's coveted in new members:
1. Expands geographical footprint - preferably includes large TV markets
2. Highly-rated academics
Of course it all has to do with money. The first one brings in TV dollars and the second one brings in research dollars.
Competitiveness in athletics is probably also a consideration. UVA isn't good in the 2 big sports, but I think they're typically one of the tops in the country in the Directors' Cup.

Unc?
I guess. Either way I'm fine as an SEC fan. UVA/UNC is a lot more appealing to me than NC State/Virginia Tech.

OK football program, a nice basketball arena, good academics, and a cool looking campus
I wouldn't mind them, although I doubt they come

quote:Immediately the best state school in the conference academically and neck and neck with Vandy as the best school overall. Would have the best law school, best graduate business school and some of the best graduate liberal arts programs. Arguably would also be the best campus in the conference. Beautiful area of the country with easy access to DC, Richmond and Hampton Roads. Decent football, solid basketball, elite baseball and would bring prestigious programs in sports that the SEC generally doesn't care about. Would essentially have to become independent in lacrosse as the SEC doesn't field enough varsity lacrosse programs, and the alumni would demand the team maintain its rivalries with Maryland, Duke, and UNC in addition to Hopkins, Navy, Syracuse and Princeton.
Virginia...What do they bring to the table?
