Optics wise I cant see boosters or fans being happy writing a $50m check to get rid of a guy for not winning ranked matchups, and then hiring a guy who is 2-23 against ranked teams
Probably not, but Rhule generally does more with less while Franklin did less with more.

Not having a talented team with Temple and Baylor... Fair. With Nebraska I dont think thats the case. They have the #20 composite this year (ahead of Ole Miss) and still lost at home to a garbage Michigan team. The only reason that game was even close was because he hit a hail mary at halftime
I hearya. What’s Michigan’s ranking in that same composite? I bet it’s higher than Nebraska’s.

What it comes down to is this, if a team's coach is not on this list or even the expanded list of 20 or 25 or 30 possible guys for the Penn State job then those schools should be getting their own list of replacement guys in order.

Yup, gives you the jump on interviewing and hiring a new coach who can start recruiting early. If I were them I’d try to have my new guy hired by Thanksgiving so he can get the ball rolling on his time here even if he’s not the “active” HC yet.

We call that the Lincoln Riley Method, find a guy who is having a successful season (the Sooners were undefeated going into the bye week when LR first traveled west to talk to USC), work out the details of the job transfer, the when and how much it will cost which gives him time to approach his best players he can bring with him.
Which nebbish players do you think follow Rhule to PSU?

Michael Jackson would fit in.

Going all in and replacing James Franklin with Dan Mullen would possibly be the funniest thing ever.
I want it to happen. Firing James Franklin and then rehiring a James Franklin.
Mullen several times denied wanting *wink, wink* the PSU job while at State.

That’s possible, but with being relatively underpaid he did negotiate his buyout down to $2 million.
He also gave a public speech in July about how is top 20 players took a pay cut to stay at Iowa State.
That isn’t going to happen every year and eventually going to a place that doesn’t have to happen is going to win. Every year the gap in p2 with the rest grows

We are going to see how much Elko really loves College Station.
If Urban is correct, they didn't fire Franklin to throw a bag at an unproven head coach like Elko. My guess would be Marcus Freeman.

If they are letting a single game impact their search, that's a bad operation.

Rhule has an even worse ranked win percentage than Franklin. That would be a all time frickup by PSU
I think there is a decent argument that Nebraska has a fairly low ceiling (at least compared to what they think their ceiling is).
I just wonder about what kind of momentum it would give them though. Like Lane at Florida has that place buzzing, it would be great for recruits. There might be guys skeptical of playing for Lane in Oxford compared to a program like Florida (whether they actually should be or not). Does Rhule really ignite that program? Not sure Elko would be like that either but I know he is a good enough coach to overcome it.

Elko. Didn’t. Play. At. Penn. State.

Matt Rhule should be the betting favorite

People in Pennsylvania love him. The only issue may be the numbers. He’s also from and knows the area. It would be a pretty good fit for them with a great recruiter and defensive mind. I just have a feeling they will go after him.

Urban always seems to have his finger on the pulse, or in the butt.

He is already mentioned as one of the guys on the list, he was a successful DC for them and knows the program/area. He can also bring a top tier QB talent with him in the portal to help quickly turn it around.
I just think a big win would help push him to the front of the line and make him a more appealing candidate to their boosters, Duke will be ranked if they win that game

Not even a lateral move at this point no reason for him to leave. ND would pay whatever to keep him.

Rhule is friends with the AD. Agree it is him
