On paper, they look like a future NFL team. But it's a long season and they still have to play the games.
I remember the last Ohio State team that was loaded with guaranteed NFL talent. That 2015 squad must have believed all the headlines, because they played like shite all year against bad teams and couldn't even win their conference after finally losing to a truly average Michigan State.

Why do you post on this site, specifically the SEC forum anyway? Big 10 forums must be as boring as that conference.

Talent helps win games. But it's not the only thing needed. Everyone says things like "Anyone could win 10 games with that talent", but that's not reality.
I remember Jim Donnan talking about the talent of the 2000 UGA team before the season and we went 8-4.
He was absolutely right about the talent though, even though it didn't perform. Particularly on the defensive side of the ball. I believe every starter from that defense was either drafted or had a multi-year NFL career. Many of the backups too. Plus a couple of backups who would have been NFL players if not for medical issues (David Jacobs who had a stroke and Decory Bryant who had a career ending spinal injury).
Coaching matters. Day is a great recruiter which is part of why his teams do well. But he's also a solid coach in all the other areas. Perhaps not as good as a Nick Saban or Kirby Smart who recruit at the same or higher levels, but he's not Jim Donnan either who could only recruit.

How do you figure? All he's proven is that he can run through a weak conference. When he's faced with similar talent and competent coaching, Day usually gets wrecked. The only notable postseason win of his career is blowing out Clemson in the semi's. Probably his best coaching job was against UGA, but he really choked that one away.

Ryan Day is 56-8. Here are his losses
2019 - Clemson (Don't even get me started on this one) The whole nation was robbed of a Ohio State vs Joe Burrow NC Game.
2020 - Alabama (no one was beating that Alabama team and it didn't help half of Ohio State's roster was out with Covid)
2021 - 2023 Michigan - They literally knew every play Ohio State was running. (those wins will be vacated by Michigan)
2021 - Oregon (lost by 7 and Stroud threw for 500 yards...thanks defense)
2022 - Georgia (hurts just as bad as the Clemson game but at least this was not ref induced. worst new years ever)
2023 - Missouri (Devin Brown gets hurts first play and Kyle McCord transferred before the game) Lincoln was seeing ghost.
There is your quick history lesson. Can't wait for CFB season.
Ohio State is going 16-0!

I have to admit it, if you look at that roster it is absolutely unbelievable, especially their defense..... Their offense is through the roof also. Nothing buthigh draft future NFL's in Sawyer, Tuimoloau, Burke, Williams, Igbinosun, Downs, Ransom, Styles, and more. On offense Henderson, Judkins, Egbuka, Jeremiah Smith, Jackson, Simmons, Tate. These are high picks and doesn't even include the depth players.....Yes, really loaded.
If they had a legit QB they would be unstoppable.
All of that talent surrounding a Question Mark at QB, so who knows.
Of course with those 2 Running Backs I don't know how much they will need to throw.

Not to mention that Ohio State is used to playing in the Playoffs & National Title Game.
I seriously doubt that they were all jacked up for " The Big Missouri Game"
There in lies their issue. They have the heart, culturally, of a quitter, not a champion. No one has ever blown through a CFB season without facing some adversity. It is not what one does when things are going their way that makes them a champion...its what they do when things are not going their way that determines their viability as a champion. It is more common to quit than to remain determined and get better....OSU may have learned their lesson, UGA did against Texas in 2018(?). If they have not changed their attitude their getting in a 12 team playoff is a waste of a spot because at some point during those games they are going to face some adversity and if they are still quitters it will show up.

You had 3 starters out, one of which was a kicker.
You were also blessed with only having to play like 7 regular season games, which helps minimize injures and players getting banged up, while Alabama had to play 11 FBS teams.

No one at Ohio State cared about the game.

Essentially Ryan Day was born on 3rd base and can't make it home.

Damn, y'all have one good year and...oh, nevermind, you're Texas. Even when your team sucks you still have the attitude.

UGA treats bowl games outside the playoff differently now. The bowl game against Texas in the 2018 season changed that.
Since then, UGA encourages players who don't want to focus on the bowl to declare for the draft and not play or travel to the bowl game. The culture is to make sure the players who will play are giving 100% in practices and in the game don't play.
In the game against Texas we had a large number of players travel to the game and play not to get hurt. Since then, we've had a good number of opt outs, but the guys that show up are either playing for draft position, playing for playing time the following season, or in a few cases they just played for pride.
Last year despite missing the playoffs, UGA had very few opt outs. It was pretty much just Bowers (technically injured) and players further down the depth chart who entered the transfer portal. Many of the NFL bound guys decided they'd rather end on a high note and blew FSU out 63-3.
OSU seems to have a culture more like FSU than like UGA.

For a guy that’s been out of the game a decade it might look that way.
