He's opting to use his redshirt and play somewhere else next season.

Ok. And. Is there a guarantee that he plays next season? What if it turns out that he isn't better than the starter wherever he goes? He is a starter at UNLV and he has had a decent first couple of games. Why not deal with the NIL collective after the season?

If everything happened as he claims, surely he's in the right to refuse to play until he's paid what was promised, isn't he?

We have repeatedly been told that NIL is not pay for play. It is supposed to be an agreement with a third party to use the players name, image or likeness for whatever. But it isn’t a contract with the school to play football. He signed to play with a football program. The NIL deal is supposed to he separate. If he has issues with a third party not meeting contractual obligations, would civil court not be the best way to resolve it if in fact they have not paid him as agreed upon?

The player and his father are indicating this is in fact a pay for play contract. If true, what would be the ramifications for the player and the school?

It would be a hell of a note if the NCAA ruled the player ineligible.

Has the player deleted his tweet? It says not found when I click on it.

Interesting.

A lot of people get paid once monthly, on the last business day of the month. Is that unfair?

It all depends on what you agreed to when you took the job.

If they told you "We pay you at the end of the month for work performed during that month", then no problem.

If they come back later and say "We are going to pay you less than we promised" or "We are not going to pay you until the end of the year", then you have a right to be upset.

Note: none of us know the true facts of this case (yet). I expect more will come out. For example, he might produce text messages he saved.

Because he will be out of eligibility and won't have any negotiating power.

That is why he wants to redshirt - to preserve his eligibility.

That tweet from Thamel seems to indicate they don’t have anything in writing. They are claiming it was a verbal promise from an assistant coach.

That seems like it would be pretty flimsy in a court of law. Why wouldn’t they have asked for something in writing?

But why quit on your team? Couldn't he just sue the collective after the season for breach of contract?
If I'm working at my job and the person in charge of paying me tells me they've changed their mind and I won't be getting paid, I'm walking out the door as soon as possible.

For better or worse, D1college football players in 2024 are mercenaries. "What about your school chums?" doesn't apply anymore.

This has been an issue for a while though. We just got to see more of the money changing hands in public.

I do agree there are a very limited number of programs that operate in the black. Outside of the SEC, Big 10, and Notre Dame I don't think any are really viable athletic programs financially

Losing money has been an issue for a while, yes but the fact that playing players was illegal kept it to a reasonable level.

Now that you've adding a tens of millions in 'payroll' many teams in those P4 conferences aren't going to be long-term viable either.

Imagine being such a gaping pussy that you quit on your team in the middle of the season because you got your fee-fees hurt.

If his side of the story is true (there's always two sides), then I guess teams will have to learn a new lesson. If you don't want gaping pussies quitting in the middle of the season, then keep your financial promises - and don't promise anything you can't keep your word on.

You're going to ask taxpayers, students, boosters, etc to spend maybe 50-100 million more per year at a big program and probably tens of millions at a G5.

They're not going to do it long term. Regular parents and voters are going to revolt against paying more for their business major to go to school so that the NIL fund can pay some random 5 star that isn't even going to stay next year.

When that happens, state legislatures will step in and that'll be the end.

This is what so many people do not understand. A lot of teams do not make much if any money. we only hear about the teams that make tons of money, but I would bet 50% or so do not make any money....or very little comparatively.

Per some insiders, he has been paid what he was promised.

His agent got in his ear after the kU win and he’s trying to angle for another year of eligibility with some more NIL.

Then the free market will speak and that practice will end.
