And they never trailed at any point during the entire season. Not even for a single second.

They probably were better than 06 UF. Certainly not 12 Alabama though.

Let's rank the BCS Champions:

1 - 2001 Miami
2 - 2011 Alabama
3 - 2003 LSU
4 - 1999 Florida State
5 - 2009 Alabama

Three out of the top 5 are Nick Saban teams.

The fact is LSU had 2 losses. They are at the bottom of the list.

I gather you don't agree with the point of the original post.

People probably don't remember how weak the schedule was because it was one of the top 5 toughest schedules of the BCS champs.

Point? 2008 Florida would've beat them 45-3. There was no beating 2008 Florida after the Ole Miss game. 2008 Oklahoma had the most prolific offense in history at the time and only scored 14 points on them.

And Ole Miss finished #14 after clowning Texas Tech in the Cotton. They would've won it all with a better hc.

When arguing over which national championship team was better you tend to see people claim that if they didn't finish the season undefeated they shouldn't be in the discussion. I have never really subscribed to this line of thinking because not every season is like the other.

Only simple minded morons would take a dogmatic stance that a team being undefeated necessarily indicates that they are better than a team with a loss. However, that description seems to fit quite a bit of message board posters.

They were a great team. No lie. But I don't think they were as dominant as some other teams in the past.

Miami would have demolished any of Saban's Alabama teams. Furthermore, they are the best team to ever play. (.)

Beaten? Maybe. Demolished? Nah.

They beat Virginia Tech (8-4) by a score of 26-24, and they beat Boston College (8-4) 18-7.

You think one of the greatest teams of all time couldn't give them a run for their money?

The AP poll champ has a loss about 50% of the time historically.

Going undefeated vs. not is often times a matter of schedule or luck.

So it's not a surprise that many of your 1 loss national champions are superior teams.

Alabama '11 and '12 were both way better teams than 09 for example.

People remember that talent and it skews the reality of their level of dominance and believe they were untouchable.

While they were certainly dominant, they were almost beaten by an 8-4 Virginia Tech team, and didn't break 20 points against 8-4 Boston College on their way to an extremely underwhelming victory.

1978 Alabama Football Team

20-3 win vs. #10 Nebraska (9-3)
38-20 win @ #11 Missouri (8-4)
14-24 loss vs. #7 USC (12-1)
51-28 win vs. Vanderbilt (2-9)
20-17 win @ Washington (7-4)
23-12 win vs. Florida (4-7)
30-17 win @ Tennessee (5-5-1)
35-0 win vs. Virginia Tech (4-7)
35-14 win vs. Mississippi State (6-5)
31-10 win vs. #10 LSU (8-4)
34-16 win vs. Auburn (6-4-1)
14-7 win vs. #1 Penn State (11-1)

1979 Alabama Football Team

30-6 win @ Georgia Tech (4-6-1)
45-0 win vs. Baylor (8-4)
66-3 win @ Vanderbilt (1-10)
38-0 win vs. Wichita State (1-10)
40-0 win @ Florida (0-10-1)
27-17 win vs. #18 Tennessee (7-5)
31-7 win vs. Virginia Tech (5-6)
24-7 win vs. Mississippi State (3-8)
3-0 win @ LSU (7-5)
25-18 win vs. #14 Auburn (8-3)
24-9 win vs. #6 Arkansas (10-2)

Only 3 of Alabama's opponents finished below .500 in 1978 as opposed to 6 in 1979. 4 of those had 8 or more losses in '79 while only 1 team on Alabama's schedule had 8 or more losses in 1978. The '78 Tide also traveled out of conference to play games in Missouri and Washington, both teams that finished with winning records. Alabama's only trip out of conference in '79 was a trip to play eventual 4-6-1 Georgia Tech in nearby Atlanta.

While it is obvious that 1979 Alabama had the better season, finishing their campaign undefeated with no ties to speak of, which was the better TEAM?

it seems remarkable in retrospect how few outstanding teams they played in conference.

you can't compare teams from different years objectively. FWIW there were some stinkers on that 79 schedule (three teams with 0 or 1 wins) so I wouldn't rush to conclude the 78 schedule was definitively stronger anyway.
