If UNC has their choice between SEC and B10, I'd be stunned at a scenario where they don't choose the B10. They likely think the SEC is beneath them. UVA is the same way.
Everyone swore up and down and said the same about Texas, yet they chose SEC.

Definitely GT over Duke and VT.
BIG”10” wouldn’t hesitate to get a beachhead in ATL. Largest city in South. Lots of up north transplants. Fertile recruiting grounds with easy access to AL, GA, FL, and SC. Don’t give them the tactical and strategic advantage of “Hawaii”
Duke out on no real football alone. Mama said it right, it’s all about foo$ball.
VT is in rural VA. UVA has TV market secure. BBall too - no sense to double down there with Duke.
Tactically, strategically and defensively, it has to be GT. Plus added bonus of quickly rekindling old, natural rivalries (AU, Tenn, etc). That brings eyeballs for TV.

I can sense your fear from here ! A&M didn't want Texas ,either. That's OK, I understand. 100+ years of losing to us has left a mark. It hurts, I guess.

Why would Duke or NC State vote to end the GOR in that situation? To get the 8 votes, all 8 need to be sure they end up where they want.
They likely wouldn’t because they don’t bring enough media rights money to even break even in the B10 and SEC so they won’t receive an invite because to do so would likely reduce the average payout for every other school in those conferences.
The only way NCSU gets in is if the SEC loses out on UNC and is hellbent on getting a school in NC.
The only incentive I can see for them to vote yes is to ensure they have a seat in a viable conference rather than being stuck a conference only held together as long as the GOR forces the top schools to remain.
NCSU is also subject to the UNC board of regents so the politics there will be interesting to watch play out.

31-30.
Clempson football program is going back down and you have no other sports to compensate. Enjoy the ACC.

I hope the SEC stays at 16.
But if we must expand, I’d rank options as follows:
1. UNC: good all-around athletics, logically expands the conference’s borders, good school, good media markets, good brand recognition.
2. VT: culturally, probably the best expansion option that also gets us into new markets. Not quite as big a brand or strong all-around as UNC.
3. FSU: the biggest athletic department left that makes sense for the SEC. But they have been acting like a bunch of whiny twats, which makes me question the wisdom of adding them. Why would they not immediately try to destroy the SEC if it is no longer beneficial to them, much the same way they are trying to destroy the ACC now?
4. Clemson: Obviously strong in football. I wonder about their staying power if and when Dabo leaves. Obviously a cultural fit, but doubling down in South Carolina isn’t as sexy as the above options.

I find this a little surprising. I always kind of thought that UNC looked down their nose at the SEC. Felt that the SEC was beneath them. I would absolutely welcome UNC, overall as University and sports wise they bring big more to the table than many others being mentioned.

I don't understand the infatuation with UNC. Barely top 50 in viewership. Basketball is moot since the average fan only cares in March.

I don’t know, I feel like the academic reputation of the SEC has improved through expansion. If UNC and UVA came, you’d have 4 of the top 10 public universities the SEC.

UNC would be a fantastic addition to the SEC. I believe the way the ACC is cooked is by enough of the conference finding deals with the Big Ten, Big-12, and SEC to get a vote to disband the conference. Will take some time but I imagine it will happen.

I think UVA and UNC are shoe-ins to be in the SEC. Also, Vanderbilt is no academic slouch either.

It’s what a couple people with connections on the UNC board are saying.
I don’t look down my nose at the SEC at all. I think it’s a good cultural fit for UNC.

Uva and VT are likely to be stick together, the state legislature is intent on them being in the same conference.

I’m not in favor of expansion but at least I can see the benefit of adding UNC. I can’t say the same for FSU.

TV market goes to VT over UVA. VT huge alumni base in the DMV which would give the SEC control over Baltimore, DC, and all the way down to Richmond.

The same thing was said about OU and OSU, as well as Oregon/Oregon ST and Wash/Wash St.
