That's why we don't have javelin @ the HS level. Of course this one wasn't even in the air.

Alabama has HS javelin

No, no, no! The worst thing you can do with an impalement is pull out the object without the medical equipment on hand that can deal with the massive bleeding/life support of these types of injuries.

Leave it there until you can get to a hospital, otherwise they're probably going to bleed out or suffocate before they can get help.

Schools should really consider implementing the Harold Wormser MKI Javelin. It is a much safer design.

Did you hear about the blind javelin thrower?

He wasn’t the best but he was the most watched.

What are modern javelins made of now?

While I agree pulling out before the hospital seems bad, sawing it off would shatter if it was fiberglass and the process of sawing it off would create issues (like when you try and saw PVC pipe in a quick fix situation as it is not in a vise to keep it from moving.

Thank you for those nightmares.

I once tripped and fell on an old railway spike on a deserted rail line in the back of my grandparent's place. It went in right under the kneecap and stuck out a bit on the other side.

I wish I could say I pulled it out because I was just such a bad arse at the age of 11 but to be honest I was in shock. Which is probably why I didn't faint and die from blood loss there.

The weird thing is... it didn't hurt. My leg didn't work, but it didn't hurt. I hobbled to the house, my brother heard me screaming and ran to get me. The only time it hurt was at the doctor's office.

The doctor started to scrape away some of the rocks in wound and the anesthetics hadn't started working. I did pass out then but I can live with that.

Such a weird thing to realize that the only reason I survived was that I was so numb from shock and adrenaline I didn't feel it.

Best of wishes to that poor kid. I hope he makes a full recovery physically. I don't know that he will ever make a full recovery mentally but you just keep on keeping on and sooner or later it fades.

Yeah, right. I've watched a lot of old westerns lately, kind of got obsessed with them, and I've seen plenty of arrows pulled out of people.

You just pull it out/tap it out, maybe take a shot of whiskey first, bite on a rag, and then just sear the hole with a hot piece of iron or something.

10 minutes later you are good to go. I'm assuming that could be done with anything, not just an arrow.

Quit getting medical advice from TV.

That is a HORRIBLE idea.

"UGA track athlete impaled by javelin

Teammates rushed to his aid and put gauze around the wound"

Not to belittle the incident, but reading that, it occurred to me they shoulda rubbed a little dirt on it and had him walk it off.

They have turbo jav, I believe. It's like a Nerf implement. We don't have either in GA.

Edit: They do throw a rubber tip javelin in AL now.

I ended up with a hole in my lung freshman year... totally ruined college swimming for me. Mine was more of a spontaneous pneumothorax, but this story hits me deep in my feels. I just can't fathom making that experience worse, but this kid definitely did.

What does that mean? Not being able to breathe must be terrifying!
