Two plays defined the game last night

1) LSU kicks a FG on 4th and 4 from the Ole Miss 6. At any other point in his career, Kiffin is going for it no question. LSU has all the momentum after a 14-0 run. And even if you don’t make it, you have an Ole Miss offense that hasn’t done anything all half pinned deep. 4th and 4 is borderline from an analytics perspective, but you can’t tell me that Kiffin wasn’t affected by the pressure of knowing all his decisions at a school like LSU will be scrutinized in a way they weren’t at Ole Miss.
2) Pete goes for 2 point conversion while up 6. This was not only a smart analytics play, but it showed his knowledge of the situation. If you have the best offensive player on the field, why give the other team a chance to win the game with him on the sideline? Same idea as going for 2 in the first OT. Also, Kiffin was absolutely going for 2 at the end either way, this just helped us know exactly what we needed.
Jury is still out on Pete long term, and he needs remedial timeout management training, but either he has a good grasp of analytics or is listening to someone who does.

Liking what I’m seeing and hearing from Golding, as a third party observer.
Certainly experienced the ability and discipline of Golding + Chambliss last year to have respect for them

He said he was planning on going for it on 4th down until the 3rd down play lost yardage.

I don't know that I've ever seen a coach do that in that situation before. It was obviously planned and discussed though, the players immediately lined up.

His postgame press conference Pete said they practiced that 2 point plan all week just in case that situation came up at the end of the game. Said they weren’t going to run a play unless LSU jumped which they did twice. Really big brain play to even practice that to steal points and put all the pressure on LSU

Agreed Pete coached circles around Lane. At his core Lane is a coward and coached like it last night.

I believe he mentioned this post-game and said that was the plan prior to the negative play on 3rd down.

I'd say the consecutive offsides on the 2-pt tries and Leavitt missing the wide open TD pass was the entire game in a nutshell. LSU shot themselves in the foot on both sides of the ball in the crucial moments.

It was certainly some outside the box coaching, and obviously baffled LSU. Like I said, I don't know that I've ever seen someone do that with that much time left.

3 false starts. 2 on the Ole Miss 2 point attempt and 1 on LSU's last drive.
Our guards are bad and Leavitt clearly needed a full offseason that he didn't get, but this game was still winnable even with those deficiencies.
But 3 false starts at the goal line killed any chance we had at tying and forcing OT.

It looks to me like he's playing hero ball instead of operating an offensive scheme. That's either because of a lack of trust/chemistry with the receivers, or he just doesn't have his own timing in the system yet.
Maybe it's some mix of the two.

As an LSU fan I have two examples of how a great QB can hide coaching deficiencies....
Brett Favre at Southern Miss.... Curley Hallman
Joe Burrow... Coach Orgeron...
I am much more cautious with my coach evals than I used to be...

Cool. He still should have gone for it. Also shouldn’t have taken the running QB off the field on 3rd down. But he loves weird stuff on 3rd and short.

I kinda feel the same way I did watching Daniels in 2022.
He did not get an offseason, but the talent is clearly there.

I didn't mind the field goal in that moment; LSU still loses the game even if they score the touchdown.
I agree though, he got too cute on the third down as he is apt to do. I have more of a problem with the third down than not going for it on 4th.

It really was. Lsu wanted to control the middle 8, and that drive with no TO's for a TD was a master class of efficiency.
