Long ago LSU used to have LSU in one end zone and the opponents colors and name in the other.

I have long wanted LSU to return to that tradition.

That’s pretty badass no lie.

How long ago was this? As an Ole Miss fan I know we played y’all in Baton Rouge every year basically (for a time) for infrastructure reasons. It is why we are second only to Alabama for wins in tiger stadium

Just wondering when this was? That would be a pretty cool thing to bring back, but you already have a pretty cool field as it is

60's and early 70's that I can remember.

In 1969 LSU Kentucky game they had 1869 in both end zones for the 100 year of college football.

North End zone had LSU in most of the games, south end zone the other teams Name in most of the games.

That should have photographs if anyone was being responsible. I know we have a shitload of pictures from that year but it’s mainly because it was the dawn of Archie Manning and the 100th anniversary of football

Checker board end zones goes back to the very old rules on passing...

the field was 110 yards and marked in 5 yard both side to side and up and down the field.

You could only pass in a line left to right or forward and backwards in that box.

Also in those days very, very few teams passed the ball, as an incomplete pass was a 15 yard penalty (LSU and Carlisle were two teams that passed a lot in between 1906-1910 before changing the passing rules again).

So is that the origin of the 5 yard markings at LSU?

I have seen old pics of fields with checkerboard end zones, but didn’t know the origin. Is the origin of Notre Dame’s end zone stripes similar?

Not a great picture of the field but it shows the old field pattern.

Pretty cool, though. Now we know where the term GRIDiron came from, I guess.

Tommy's punt return on Ole Miss 1970, it shows the south End zone, in Ole Miss Blue and Rebels (I think it, hard to tell on film) in red.

That's really cool about the other team having a painted end zone

Sight lines at swamp are awful
Tenn seating is awful no seating room at all

Ole miss and state have come a long way
They were basically high school stadiums before upgrades

LSU has made a lot of improvements but at some point the aging lower bowl will need to be replaced

For the ones outside of LSU I’ve been to I enjoyed stadium at both uga and auburn

Where did you sit? I’ve never heard that as a complaint, in fact it’s usually just the opposite because of how the corners were constructed.

Oddly, Arkansas never had a midfield logo at Razorback Stadium until 2008.

There were several bad ones at War Memorial in Little Rock over the years, but the University had no control over that. They now use the same one as Razorback Stadium.

I will never understand the yard markers at LSU.
On my grandmother’s grave, I’m not intending to be insulting.
Undoubtedly it’s a tradition of some kind, and I can completely respect that.
But the every 5 marker thing is akin to saying, “We need help counting.”

Early gridiron football rules only required 5 yards for a first down. Most fields labeled yard lines every five yards, and LSU just kept theirs that way. It’s just one of those quirks we have.
