7. Mark Ingram- Alabama
Vastly overrated. The guy only rushed for over 1,000 yards once in his SEC career (and has yet to do it in the NFL). Shaun Alexander, Trent Richardson, and Eddie Lacy were all better than him, and that's just Alabama running backs. His Heisman trophy season appears to be more of an anomaly than the norm when compared to the rest of his career.

Watch what Shaun Alexander did to LSU in one half of play and then tell me he should not be on the list.

You would be hard pressed to find a more dominant performance in one half of play vs a quality opponent.

So one half of football = discussion for best SEC running back ever?

Well in that case, look at what Robert Edwards did in knoxville in just the first quarter before shattering his foot. He could make a case for GOAT rb in football history!

I find the lsu hate for Ingram a little odd. He averaged over 5 YPC against them in his career. 48 for 247 and a touchdown.

That's not LSU hate, that's Saints remorse.

I would take a healthy Eddie Lacy, Trent Richardson and Shaun Alexander any day over Ingram.

Bobby Humphries as well.

Hell Ben Tate was better than Ingram the year he won the heisman and said as much.

For Alabama, that's Kerry Goode. I really think he would have been the best back ever to play at UA.

If he would have played for Mullen or any half way competent coach for more than 1 year who knows where his career would have gone.

Here's a list of yardage leaders and YPC leaders. The guys that fall on both of these and the touchdown list have to be considered (* denotes bowl stats included)

https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/conferences/sec/leaders/rush-yds-player-career.html

Interesting... of the Top 50 rushers in the SEC since 1956, the breakdown is as follows (and looking at the stats, I'm assuming this list does not include non-SEC years for now-SEC schools):

9 - Auburn
7 - Bama
7 - Florida
5 - Tennessee
4 - UGA
4 - Kentucky
4 - LSU
4 - Mississippi State
3 - Arkansas
2 - Ole Miss
1 - Vanderbilt
1 - South Carolina

Auburn University... Running Back U. (Four of the Top 15... five of the Top 20.)

University of Georgia?

Why are you laughing?

Oops sorry, an auburn fan was poking fun at UGA, I forgot I'm not allowed to say anything back lest I be considered whiny or butthurt. That's what I learned today.

Fantastic running back no one had ever heard of when he got to Bama because he had come from such a small high school.

He earned the starting job over Linnie Patrick midway through his freshman year and had some serious highlight-reel runs against the likes of UT and AU. He was really something special.

The first game of his sophomore year (against Boston College and Doug Flutie), he blew out his knee very early in the third quarter. At that point in the game he had over 300 all purpose yards and three touchdowns. He came back a year later, but he was never the same. Gene Jelks and Bobby Humphrey came in, and both passed him on the depth chart.

Opening kickoff of the 2nd half vs. BC

IIRC, this was the last time he touched the ball before the knee was shredded. He was elusive, and his speed was amazing.

Charles Alexander is a name no one every remembers.

Heisman finalist who still has the LSU record for rushing yards in a season.

Factual.

Look at the years he played. Highest oldest ranked player on that list. He was a monster. On a team that really didn't have much besides Alexander The Great. Every team keyed on him and still couldn't do much to stop him

Herschel is #1 in total yards.

Herschel is not even listed in the Top 50 in yards per carry.

And for those who want to whine that his ypc was just because he had more career carries, how does that explain how he never had a single season averaging over 6 yards per carry? Bo had *three* individual seasons averaging over 6 yards per carry. Bo's worst season ypc (5.5) was better than two of Herschel's (4.9 and 5.2)
