quote:

10. "... a shutdown cornerback.." - No such thing (quote Nick Saban) because a well thrown ball always beats a corner...

If you take it literally yes. But if you take it how you are supposed to then it does exist. Revis and Millner(in college) are two examples of shutdown corners.

quote:

9. ".. team needs a true difference maker on (Pick'um - defense, DB, DL DE DT DQ DWI..." - Geezzzz, WTF how does one "difference maker" make a difference in a team game as complex as football? WTF IS a "difference maker?" My guess it is someone "who makes plays.." see #3 below.

Nick Fairley absolutely was a difference maker. He rushed the passer well enough to lighten the load on the secondary since they didn't have to cover as long. Also shut down the middle of the line on runs. Without him, our '10 Defense isn't nearly good enough to win the NC even with Cam on the other side.

quote:

8. "... We young but we'll get after you..." - Duh ... all college teams are young and what does "get after you" have to do with winning football games?

Young is obviously relative in this case but you knew that. It's just an excuse for not being good.

quote:

6. "our team is like family..." - OMG I hope not unless you like a big disfunctional nightmare of a family with 90 unruly teenagers and no den mother... Whenever I hear this I immediately think that they really intended "family" to mean "street gang..." God help the college team that is "like family..."

You mad.

quote:

2. "They wanted it more ...." - dumbest statement in sports. OMG, if any team, even one filled up with 160 lb slow white boys, just "wanted" it more... OMG - the French just didn't want it as much as the Germans in 1940.

If two teams have the same talent, who wins? The team with more motivation or the one with less to play for?

This thread seems entirely devoted to criticizing typical football lingo. If you removed all those phrases from a coaches vocabulary, most of them wouldn't have anything to say.

Whenever I see family I don't think "street gang".

I think "cult".

10. Disagree. Deion Sanders was a shutdown corner.
9. A player that causes double and triple teams and still makes plays. See Suh at Nebraska.
8. Never heard this.
7. It is to reiterate that teams are full of athletes that look ahead or take teams for granted. Happens all the time.
6. War Damn Eagle.
5. Gumps be gumpin.
4. Well can they? Is it mathematically possible?
3. It means make a play.
2. I agree. Lazy journalism and idiocy of the highest order.
1. You sound extremely envious of the swamp kittens.

This is pure idiocy. Two teams are equally talented and equally motivated all the time and games don't end in ties.

That phrase isn't said for every game. Sometimes the reason a team wins is because they have more motivation which would be the proper time to use it. Every phrase can be misused but that doesn't make it a stupid phrase.

That line may not have gotten Mike Sherman fired, but it sure forced me off the fence about him. In his case he wasn't talking about one game, it was all those 2nd half meltdown games.

I always thought it was funny when the sports analysts are talking about the game before it starts and they give the "keys" to the game. It's always something like "control the clock, win the turnover battle, get good field position, etc." Aren't those "keys," along with a slew of other stuff, part of the goal for every game and every opponent...

Might as well just said, what they've got to do is score more points than the other team.

Yeah? Well you didn't make those plays. And the other team could say "We were just a play or two away from really blowing them out".
Bama vs A&M for your case in point.
