He's a great coach but it's too hard to get elite talent to USCjr. He's brought South Carolina up to the top of the SEC this year without a ton of competition. But the rest of the SEC is catching up with coaching hires, and those other coaches seem to be bringing in much better talent. Starting next year you'll see South Carolina start to slide back to the middle of the SEC. If he wants to compete at the highest level consistently in the SEC then he'll need to go somewhere he can build something like Mizzou

If that's the case Auburn will always finish near dead last.

and Lol at you if you think Pearl can get Auburn even better than "mid pack" in the SEC. The rules have fricked over his style of play (you see it with Mike Anderson at Arky). If this were the 2000s ya'll would have a chance at becoming one of the better SEC schools, but not now.

I'm not going to trade "angry dad" for Mike White, but he really is a very good coach, imo.

He's doing the same thing with USC as he did with K State. His kids will always scrap and he gets complete buy-in to his message. Of course, he's scares them to death as well ;~

Why do you think this? USC was pretty damn good at basketball in the Frank McGuire days. Its in the middle of Columbia surrounded by Charlotte, Charleston, Greenville, and Atlanta. Odd sentiment considering your team in the middle of nowhere.

We border North Carolina. If we keep winning, things could change. But for right now those schools in NC will get who they want.

He's a good coach, don't get me wrong, but I can't see his style ever winning a title, so there are several SEC coaches I'd take over him

White, Barnes, Cal, Howland. Jury is out on Avery. Bryce Drew has a higher ceiling. And it'd be interesting to see what Andy Kennedy could do at a better program.

Well I think Martin is the best BB "coach" in the SEC. However, I don't see him being a good recruiter. He is "old school" and has some Bobby Knight in him. An intense teacher of fundamentals no doubt. Edit to say SC's record has been better than their talent level since he has been there

Exactly. Agreed.

Plus, McGuire's legacy lives on in this state. We produce a lot of big time talent. Problem has been that it's been going out of state, mostly UNC and the ACC, for years. (Seventh Woods recently, et al)

Martin has a good eye for talent. If he can keep the big time players home and recruit the 250 mile radius around Columbia plus keep the Lithuanian railroad open and running, he'll be very successful.

He also has some really strong ties to the very talent rich Miami area.

I saw his Miami Senior team in thr Bristol Arby's Classic in like.....1996 maybe?

Udonis Harlem, the other big guy that went to Florida (Brent Wright?). Great team.

It definitely impacts the defensive game, since effective pressing is near impossible w today's foul environment.

Offensively, Pearl still has it, fast breaks and transition scoring is still a huge part of the game. Half court offense only looks bad for Auburn when our FR don't run the offense. Few times we move/pass we've looked great

It has nothing to do with identifying talent. Martin is just one of the few coaches who can take an unrefined raw athlete and develop at a high level

Any idiot can find an athlete, only Martin can regularly make that athlete an elite defender

What leads you to believe this? I will admit that he has done a solid job so far but he greatly underachieved while at Texas with the talent he had.

He made the Texas program so not sure how he could Under achieve. Only post 1950 Final four and 3/4 Elite 8s were under him.

His talent levels also weren't that great. The years they were they did well and won a ton

What? I'm not going to go through ever year because he was there for 15 but to say his talent wasn't that great doesn't really make sense. I'll give you that he became a little bit of a victim of his own success. Here are his classes for a 4 year stretch towards the end of his tenure there.

2012- 9th ranked class
2011- 5th ranked class
2010- 23 ranked class
2009- 2nd ranked class

He didn't make it to the sweet 16 once after '09. There isn't an excuse for that with those recruiting numbers. How he manged to not even get to the sweet 16 with Durant in '07 is crazy as well. Not sure how you can say that he didn't greatly underachieve from purely a coaching x's/o's aspect in his last 6 to 7 years there.

If you were talking about Rick Barnes from early 2000's I might agree but I don't see it atm. Maybe he will continue to improve Tenn. and prove me wrong.

Martin isn't a dream, hes a realistic get for Mizzou. Mizzou could get better too, but martin would be a good start.

Mizzou has played Martin every year for 10 years. He has said how much he enjoys COMO, and how familiar he is with the city. Hes more familiar with recruiting MO than he is around SC.

His style can certainly lead to titles. The only thing not making us elite right now is a knock down shooter that can create his own shot. If he finds someone like this who will buy into defense the way Notice does, this team would be very tough to beat.
