Pay, Play, Get a Trophy mind set that started with tball has been embraced by the NCAA.
When I "coached" tball the mothers were very vocal that we have an end of season party and that I present a trophy to every player. I tried to explain that tball was not a competitive sport and that a trophy should be earned .
At the end of season party every kid was given a trophy as the gang of mothers over ruled me.

I hated the play-in crap...64 teams..no point in adding more ..10+ seeds or higher def do not win titles..I believe the lowest seed to win is 8 and that was in 1985..a year before I was born..and I have grey hairs in my beard.
