Change it from Coach of the Year to Surprise Season of the Year, because that's what it boils down to. The coach that wins the award wins it because he followed up a mediocre season with a stellar season absolutely no one saw coming. And then that same coach is usually fired from the program three or four seasons later.

Nick Saban is the best coach in the game and yet he only has one Coach of the Year award since arriving at Alabama nearly 12 years ago.

This won’t go over well, but Saban most certainly deserved it this year.

You'll get a lot of downvotes and lazy comments about how easy it is for him, but you're right. Pretty ridiculous that the best coach in the country hasn't won COY in 10 years.

Kelly did a great job, but you just have to laugh at tweets like this.

Yep, Coach of the Year is a terrible name for the award.

it really is "Coach who exceeded expectations"

Hell, he hasn't won the Bear Bryant COTY since 2003 I think.

If it was simply "best coach" then why not just go ahead and preemptively give it to saban every preseason until he retires?

I'm not debating he's the best coach in history because I believe he is, but bama expecting to go 12-0 then going 12-0 isn't quite as surprising to me as someone like kentucky expecting to go 5-7 but going 9-3 instead and 1 win away from winning the east.

I've said this before, but I think the coach of the year should go to the coach who best helped his team to overcome whatever adversity the best.
Perhaps it was devastating injuries, new assistant coaches to mix in, or showing some best plays based on what you have, etc.
Just because (most likely because of the coach's own previous shortcomings) a team wins more than expected, us not a sole reason to give out the award.

For example, I think Jimbo Fisher or Dan Mullins should get consideration due to overcoming some of the crap left behind.
Returning coaches like Kirby in handling his QB situation, etc.

The best and only explanation.

If he's doing the best coaching job each year, then yeah, he should get it every year.

So Saban should be handicapped because people have high expectations of him? Surprising people shouldn't be the main criteria.

I hate that narrative. That's like giving an idiot at your job an award because they had a good day of work after usually sucking. Meanwhile, the person that always does a good job is ignored because it's expected of them and they get no recognition for the good job they do every day.

I'm not saying give it to the same person every year, but counting out someone because they maintain the same level year in and year out is ludicrous.

This is why I don't care about any of the individual awards. It's nice when our guys get them because they look good in the trophy cases when the recruits visit. But, the picks are dumb more often than not.

Saban should win it. Did someone else win it?

Because he might not do the best job coaching EVERY year.

But it's insane that he only has 1 when you look at all the changes he hasn't made in his style and how much coaching turnover he has had.

Are there any coaches left from the day he signed at Alabama? It should be impossible for him to only have 1 of these awards.

ETA: That last part was me assuming we were talking about SECCOTY. My bad.

Saban has won national coach of the year from someone in 2003, 2008, 2014 and 2016. He's won SEC COY in 2003, 2008, 2009, and 2016.

Like Brian Kelly (3x), Dabo Swinney, Gary Patterson, Nick Saban (4x), Chip Kelly, Urban Meyer, Pete Carroll, Bob Stoops, Joe Paterno, etc.?

Sure, that happens, but I wouldn't call it the norm?

Or are you just mad Saban doesn't win every year?

You mentioned nothing about coaching jobs in your OP, only that saban is the "best coach" therefore the award should be renamed..

agree that it's almost unthinkable he doens't have more, but I mean this year for example I absolutley don't think he deserves it. I have no input on any year prior to this one because I don't know who all was in the race.

Probably why he won it in 2016. He lost a Hesiman trophy winning back in henry and Kenyon Drake and replaced his starting QB with a freshman. He lost Kirby Smart to UGA and completely revamped and modernized the offense from anything he had done previously in his career. He also lost his senior captain on defense for the season in the Ole Miss game. And that team coasted through the regular season, only playing one game, in week 3, closer than two scores.
