LSU's were named for the Louisiana Zouaves who "Fought like tigers" under Gen. Rob't E. Lee. We're keeping ours because our Tigers are SOUTHERN. Your excuse for your mascot is mighty weak if you're looking to play in the Southeastern Conference.

One last item regarding LSU... Our founder and first president of the university in 1860 was William T. Sherman. The cannon that sit on either side of the doors at the entry to the Military Science bldg were presented to LSU by Sherman after the war. (Bet he didn't send anything to Mizzou like that.)

Why do you do this? You are an embarrassment to Missouri.

"The Diehards"

9th Louisana Tigers Regiment at 2nd Manassas. They ran out of ammunition and then they stoned the yankees.

This bunch was tough and rowdy as hell. Major Roberdeau Wheat was the only commander that could control them.

Partially true. It was a home guard, but against all forces. Or so historically it goes.

Just name them after pro teams:
LSU Bengals
Auburn Eagles

And we'll call Georgia the Southern Packers

Reading these references to the best movie of all time (that youngsters will have a hard time picking up on) has made this thread very enjoyable. Well done to both of you.

It is indeed the best.

I read the book before the movie and watched the movie in a theater the night it was released in 1987.

LSU also has the flying tigers which were voluntary airman who flew the most famous P-40s of the war. (If you are a 70s kid you or a buddy had the models) Also a bad arse John Wayne Movie)

Claire Lee Chennault was their commander. Several of his handwritten memoirs are at Hill Memorial Library. I used to spend hours and hours in there going through his notes. He left a WHOLE lot of stuff related to the AVG to LSU.

LSU is named as the confederate regiment that every yankee was terrified of. They would burn a town to the ground if they didn’t fork over their whiskey rum, and women immediately.

What Northern towns did they attack or were they just terrorizing southerners?

No. This is the SOUTHeastern Conference. If your team is named after a bunch of carpet bagging Yankees, you have to change YOUR name.

E. TN tried to secede from the secession. N. GA and N. AL worked with Unionists from Tennessee and elsewhere in the South to sabotage confederate efforts and on and on the examples could go. The South does not = 4 years of treason in the name of slavery.
