Never said he was great, but he did a heck of a job building Rutgers.

Is it bad that I recognize these recruiting results as a momentary blip (look at some of Les Miles' Kansas classes this early in the cycle) but agree wholeheartedly with the topic's title?

I love it when UT posters admit that Rutgers and Tennessee are the same caliber programs.
Let me know when you find anyone that honestly believes that. I've got some bridges to sell.

I am thinking Auburn as well!

Seriously, what makes him great?
Our qualifiers may simply be different.
Meyer was great at Bowling Green and the Utah and proved himself at Florida.
That’s qualifiers of a great coach.
If 2005 was happening right now, Meyer would turn down Tennessee to stay at Utah and wait for something better.
Schiano had Rutgers deep in the national title conversation in November 2007. They were consistently winning 8 games a year until he left for Tampa Bay. The only people who think that isn't great are retards who have no context of college football history.

The most important fact being that the State's STAR WITNESS made the claims regarding Schiano witnessing something under oath.
A fact that Mike McQueary could not substantiate as he was relating second-hand information he claimed to get from a coach (Tom Bradley) who denied ever having that conversation with McQueary to begin with. Clay Travis stopped the hire of a decent collegiate football coach based entirely on hearsay testimony.

Sandusky used PSU facilities to groom and rape boys. If dude didn’t know it’s because he chose not to know. No fricks given about anyone in that program at that timeframe.

This is proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

So now we’re debating fantastical historical menageries?
That “greatness” led to a defensive coordinator spot and a no thank you from Belichick.
It’s mind boggling to think that Heupel is potentially at Tennessee for seven years and the conversation is still about Schiano.

Heupel was at Missouri as the OC and he said he hated recruiting. That is a red flag. Look how Missouri HC Drinkwitz is doing right now as a recruiter and a HC? Great so far! Look at Brian Harsin at Auburn? You can argue all you want but it is important to get the recruiting class to a respectable in the first year and/or two. Last year with the COVID-19 It was understandable for Drinkwitz and it wasn't too bad. This year it is light years better.

Would you want him at UCF? Butch wouldn't even go there.

Yeah, Heupel being our only recruiter, we're definitely gonna suck at recruiting. There's definitely no other coaches on the staff who are allowed to recruit, have been recruiting the SEC for decades or whatever. And Tennessee certainly doesn't have the resources to recruit at all. No sir.
Tennessee isn't going to recruit with the Bamas, UGAs, or LSUs anytime remotely soon, but it's not a stretch to recruit better than the lower half of the East and even the lower half of the West to be honest. It's development that's been the issue. I'm not worried about recruiting nearly as much as I am development.

They let the twitter mob make hiring decisions and are still paying the price for it. It's really funny if you think about it.
