The Transfer Portal - some questions

Can a player be in the portal AND remain on the team?
Is it correct the first transfer can have the player on the team immediately but a second transfer is ineligible for a year?

Unless they get a waiver they have to sit out a year after the first transfer .
Idk about the 1st question. I don’t really think they would want to be on the team and be in the portal though. I don’t really understand what you’re getting at there

They can put their name in and remove it and come back

He may be wondering about, say, a kid who’s in the portal but the team has a bowl game. The school would lose depth if the guy isn’t still on the roster, even though with one foot out the door.

I agree but my thinking is some players enter the transfer portal but return to the team AND almost all need facilities to continue to work out.
I’m guessing some players remain in the good graces of both coaches and teammates AND a few burn bridges

I’ve heard it reported that only 45 to 50% of the portal entries actually find another team.

The Western Kentucky QB was in the portal and just announced he’s coming back

I just wonder what that does to team chemistry and coaching relationships.
It seems like it would create a weird dynamic.

They can if the school agrees. The school can also say, "no, thank you."

Short answer is yes. They can remain on the team, but the coach also has the option to pull the scholarship from the portal player and make him homeless.
The player is immediately eligible after the first transfer. Any subsequent transfers require the player to sit out a year UNLESS it is a grad transfer, upon which the grad transfer rules will apply.

If it’s true that 45-50% of players don’t find a landing spot it is a dangerous gamble for sure.

Yes once you enter the portal you may return to current team but current team is no longer obligated to honor your scholarship. For instance Aaron Anderson is still being recruited by Alabama but the rest that entered the portal have been removed from The roster. If they don’t find a home too bad. They don’t play next year

Kirby Smart allowed Justin Fields to stay on the roster, practice with the team for the bowl game, and travel to the game with the team. I would have pulled his scholly and not allowed him near the team or the athletic department after they way he slandered the school.

It's a new college football world now so you can't afford to get your feelings hurt. Let bygones be bygones and let's go play.

Truth… especially if the returning player can add value or depth.
