Petrino was a flash in the pan with two good seasons

Petrino was more than just a flash in the pan. He would have had Arkansas in competition for the SEC West on a consistent basis had he not taken a ride on his motorcycle that day. He improved Arkansas's record each season he was there:

2008: 5-7
2009: 8-5
2010: 10-3 (Sugar Bowl appearance)
2011: 11-2 (Cotton Bowl win)

Arkansas should have gone 11-2 or even 12-1 in 2010 but they lost to Alabama in a game they should have won as they were the better team for 3 1/2 quarters that day. They also should have beaten Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl but herp derped inside the red zone in the final minutes.

Petrino had a system and it apparently didn't need top talent to run it. Which explains how he had the baconeers as high as top 5 before he broke out the Harley.

I just didn't like the way he exposed his QB in that system. The thought of Tyler Wilson dropping back to pass still makes me flinch.

He was an elite play caller in his prime. That said he won with Mallett who was a 5* QB and had several 4* WRs who were one of the best WR rooms in college football at the time. Tyler Wilson was a 4* as well. He wasn’t exactly doing it all with 2 and 3 stars.

Mallet was a transfer out of Michigan. From what I recall about Petrino's recruiting, even when arky got the ball rolling, it was very bad by SEC standards. One year, he cleared the top 20 but had to take 31 recruits to do it. Otherwise, it looked like this: 37, 18, 49, 24, 34.

Elite recruits weren't lining up to play for Petrino, even though he did a good job developing what he had. Which is my point about the system he ran.

Nutt was an idiot with the best backfield in SEC history but went 18-16 and no bowl wins. Didn't win Jack shite. That is why he was fired after the 2007 season. Petrino would have won an SEC title with that group.

He kissed arse and last 10 years too long. Never hired an OC unless pushed and didn't develop any of his quarterbacks.

He was lazy and just wanted to win enough to keep his job. He was a loser deep inside because he knew that he was a fraud. But had he took the initiative to be a better coach then he would have won an SEC title and left on better terms.

Just a bout and even players like Alvin Bailey that went undrafted, started on an NFL team for a brief period of time.

He wouldn't last one semester. Holtz told him to transfer because he wasn't good enough. But his ego wouldn't tell him the truth and developed a narcissist personality.

Yeah Mallett wanted to go to Arkansas out of high school but didn’t want to play for Nutt, who worked him out at TE at a camp. Petrino did a good job his first class getting Mallett to transfer and flipping Joe Adams from USC but I’ll agree over the long term he didn’t like recruiting enough to sustain 10 and 11 win seasons.

Nutt had his faults but he did win the SEC West twice and won 9+ games in a season about 4 or 5 times. Of course he also benefitted from having freaks like Matt Jones and Darren McFadden fall in his lap from in state.

Recruiting is exactly why Petrino seems to either dip out before a full 4-year cycle or have his entire program fall apart.

I think Sam Pittman gonna be a good one for Arkansas though. And it worked out well for Alabama despite missing out on him because Cristobal built Alabama’s pipeline from Miami to Tuscaloosa.
