Permanent opponents in parentheses. 3-2-3 divisional play. Play the three opponents in your division, 2 permanents, and 3 others rotating.
SEC South
Florida (Tennessee and Georgia)
Virginia Tech ( Missouri and Texas A&M)
South Carolina (Vanderbilt and Arkansas)
N.C. State (Missouri and Miss. State)
These are two teams from the original SEC east melded with two new additions. I'm trying to keep the relative strength of the divisions somewhat equal, but this one is definitely a bit top-heavy. It could make sense to switch out Vanderbilt/Kentucky with N.C. State, but I've also tried to balance the top-heavy nature of the divisions by setting up South Carolina with Vanderbilt as one of its consistent rivals. That way the Gamecocks get a relatively easy yearly opponent which helps to balance out the toughness of the division.
SEC East
Georgia (Florida and Auburn)
Tennessee (Florida and Alabama)
Kentucky (Miss. State and Texas A&M)
Vanderbilt (Ole Miss and South Carolina)
Four of the six teams of the original SEC East remain minus the two teams that went to the SEC South. Georgia and Tennessee are the traditional powers in this division. As you can see, the top teams in this division, Tennessee and Georgia, have absolutely brutal rivalry games every year against top teams from outside their own divisions while Kentucky and Vanderbilt have easier rivalry games.
SEC Central
Alabama (Tennessee and LSU)
Auburn (Georgia and LSU)
Ole Miss (Vanderbilt and Arkansas)
Miss. State (Kentucky and N.C. State)
The name is also flexible here, I've abandoned the SEC North (since these teams aren't north) in favor of the SEC Central, but as you can see, four of the original teams from the SEC West are actually included in this division.
All season long the Iron Bowl would still loom as the ultimate challenge, although now it would likely determine who wins the division and advances to the Final Four of the SEC.
SEC West
Missouri (Virginia Tech and N.C. State)
Texas A&M ( Kentucky and Virginia Tech)
Arkansas (South Carolina and Ole Miss)
LSU (Alabama and Auburn)
A bit of the old Southwest Conference brought to the SEC.

Sweet, Bama would have a tough cross division opponent!

and I actually like the idea of 4 small divisions.

How would the SEC Champ be determined? Semi final?

the article is nearly a year old and is a massive fail with NC State and VT - neither of which are free to leave the ACC unless their sister schools give the OK.

LSU would drop Auburn before Ole Miss

I did a thread where I figured all this out on the sec rant a while back. Wish I could find it.

also a good point. LSU - Ole Miss will always be played, this isnt a UT-aTm type deal.

I'd love that, ten game season(would be 12 games total but division champs play for SEC Championship).

Sounds like more bullshite. More permanent opp. crap which will be a disadvantage for some and an advantage for others depending on who gets stuck with who. No matter how you count it, that sort of system is not fair.
Simply... you want team X and team Y to play every year put them in the same freaking division.
Oh and they keep saying more money without ever clarifying that more isn't necessarily going to be better... You still have to divide the "more money" between MORE schools.

Maryland just left. It cost them 50 million.

Do you really think most of the Tiger fans care if we keep the Ole Miss rivalry intact? I don't...The Auburn games in the past 25 years have been the most exciting....

Maryland leaving has nothing to do with vt now being tied to uva, and nc state to unc, both due to politics.
Neither can just pay the buyout and leave the acc, and this has been discussed ad nauseam

I posted this in an sec rant thread today. It assumes Va Tech and NC St are added.
The pod system is great if we're at 16. But I think before grouping the teams geographically the teams should be "seeded" based on history and realistics prospects going forward. Each pod should have a 1,2,3 and 4 "seed' for balance. I've heard Va Tech and NC St as the most likely new additions. If true I would make the 1 seeds Alabama,Florida, LSU and UGA, 2 seeds Auburn, Tennessee, A&M and S Carolina, 3 seeds VA Tech, Arkansas, Missouri, NC ST, 4 seeds Vandy, Ole Miss, Miss St, UK.
Yes, UT is historically #2 overall in the conference by many criteria, but I think UT needs the absolute right coach in order to win big. I feel that UGA, LSU and UF can win realtively big without a great coach. A&M historically is maybe below a 2 seed, but I think they have greater potential and could soon approach 1 seed caliber.Va Tech would be a 2 seed over the last 10 years, but will they remain there when Beamer retires and they move to a tougher conference?
The below pods look pretty balanced. And everyone could keep one constant opponent so that the sacred cow rivalries could be maintained.
Alabama, Auburn, Missouri, UK
LSU, A&M, Arkansas,Ole Miss
UGA, Tenn, Va Tech, Vandy
Florida, S Carolina, NC ST, Miss St

Big East basketball tried this and i can't tell who the heck is in that conference anymore.
12 was perfect. 14 was unjustified. 16 could risk ruining the greatest conference ever.
