Modern era should only include BCS

Well in that case, everyone else is looking up at Bama, LSU, and UF.

I've seen the mark of the modern era determined by things such as the use of full facemasks (1951) and the coaches poll, which was 1950.

Was there really much of a difference in game in say the 30' the 50's and the 70's, by and large?

I can't believe the disparity between the number of games played against other big 6 schools. No wonder everyone made LSU keep Florida.

FWIW, the NCAA defines the "modern era" as string in 1937.

The number of opponent who finished ranked in SEC conference games since 1950:

1. Mississippi St. 192
2. Vanderbilt 184
3. Kentucky 183
4. Auburn 178
5. LSU 156
5. Florida 156
7. Tennessee 153
8. Alabama 152
9. Mississippi 149
10. Georgia 141

Obviously weren't in the conference the whole period:

11. Arkansas 75
12. South Carolina 72
13. Tulane 43
14. Georgia Tech 27

The combined conference record of opponents each team played in conference games (removing the head to head game):

1. Auburn (1386-1176-63)--0.54000
2. Arkansas (581-534-5)--0.52098
3. Mississippi St. (1315-1229-67)--0.51647
4. LSU (1264-1233-55)--0.50607
5. Florida (1255-1241-57)--0.50274
6. Kentucky (1265-1254-69)--0.50213
7. South Carolina (558-556-6)--0.50089
8. Tennessee (1258-1266-59)--0.49845
9. Georgia Tech (262-264-32)--0.49821
10. Vanderbilt (1238-1260-60)--0.49570
11. Alabama (22.92-14.40) (1288-1321-68)--0.49384
12. Georgia (1213-1310-62)--0.48124
13. Tulane (258-284-43)--0.47778
14. Mississippi (19.89-20.20) (1141-1352-64)--0.45874

You can find it referenced in the NCAA Record book. The NCAA started keeping record in 1937, hence the modern era.

The 2011 book can be obtained here:

2011 NCAA Record Book

The first reference is on page 21, but you can search for them if you like.

SEC Championships:
Alabama:22
UT: 13
GA: 12
LSU: 11
UF: 9
au: 7
OM: 6
GT: 5
They have 1 more than Ole Miss and 2 more than Ga Tech ( Which left the SEC in 1965 ) and if you ask me they are not in the big 5...

not until recently has AU struggled against them. Auburn had a winning record vs everyone but UA and LSU in the SEC if memory serves.

I prefer to use 1970 as the start ofthe modern era for reasons of rules changes in the game, integration and television.

LSU
vs UA: 16-26-1 .384
vs AU: 15-12 .556
vs UF: 16-23 .415
vs UGA: 7-8 .467
vs UT: 8-8-1 .500

Thanks. At least it is not arbritary but the 30's seems a bit far back. I think I'll stick with 1987 season.

Because of our 3 rivalries with AL, GA and FL. And we played TN on the reg as well.

If anything Box Lunch proved LSU had one of the tougher schedules of the big 6 since 1950. Big 6 have been up and down. Don't forget Florida was down in the 50's and Ole Miss was up

Yeah but bowls are hard.

I have a feeling that TeLeFaWx's view of bowls is about to change. In the Big 12 (with a bunch of -/+) you would finally get to play a team that understood defense. Now you will start to see bowl games as little more than a chance to gain more practice time to get read for next season (unless you are in play for the trophies).
