FWIW, the NCAA defines the "modern era" as string in 1937.
The number of opponent who finished ranked in SEC conference games since 1950:
1. Mississippi St. 192
2. Vanderbilt 184
3. Kentucky 183
4. Auburn 178
5. LSU 156
5. Florida 156
7. Tennessee 153
8. Alabama 152

You can find it referenced in the NCAA Record book. The NCAA started keeping record in 1937, hence the modern era.
The 2011 book can be obtained here:

not until recently has AU struggled against them. Auburn had a winning record vs everyone but UA and LSU in the SEC if memory serves.

I prefer to use 1970 as the start ofthe modern era for reasons of rules changes in the game, integration and television.

Thanks. At least it is not arbritary but the 30's seems a bit far back. I think I'll stick with 1987 season.

If anything Box Lunch proved LSU had one of the tougher schedules of the big 6 since 1950. Big 6 have been up and down. Don't forget Florida was down in the 50's and Ole Miss was up

I have a feeling that TeLeFaWx's view of bowls is about to change. In the Big 12 (with a bunch of -/+) you would finally get to play a team that understood defense. Now you will start to see bowl games as little more than a chance to gain more practice time to get read for next season (unless you are in play for the trophies).
