I just got curious as to what the addition to the conference of the University of Texas (51k) and the University of Oklahoma (21k) will mean for total enrollment.

No surprise that Texas will be the second largest school after A&M. I was surprised, however, to see that Oklahoma will be the second SMALLEST school, after Vandy. Basically a junior college.

Florida (50k)
Alabama (38k)
Georgia (37k)
South Carolina (34k)
Missouri (33k)
LSU (31k)
Kentucky (30k)
Auburn (28k)
Tennessee (28k)
Arkansas (27k)
Ole Miss (24k)
Mississippi State (22k)
Oklahoma (21k)
Vanderbilt (12k)

I would have bet money Oklahoma would have more students than OM or MSU.

Not a knock of tLandmasses, just a surprise.

Not that surprising

SEC states by US population

#2 Texas
#2 Florida
#8 Georgia
#15 Tennessee
#18 Missouri
#23 South Carolina
#24 Alabama
#25 Louisiana

#26 Kentucky
#28 Oklahoma
#34 Arkansas
#35 Mississippi

My guess is the population of OK and correlating student population for OU should be similar to KY, AR, and MS.

Weird flex?

not a “flex“ of any sort. I just always assumed that the University of Oklahoma was larger than that.

I was also surprised to see that Oklahoma State has more students (22k) than the University of Oklahoma (21k).

I remember when I first started at UA, the enrollment was closer to the Mississippi schools than Florida.

It is insane how much the University of Alabama has grown. Not all for the better but it has started to pay dividends on overall academic reputation.

You ever driven through Oklahoma? It has about half the population of Alabama and it feels like it. I've done layovers in Tulsa on trips to see family in Colorado the last few years and it is one of the most overbuilt cities roadway infrastructure-wise I've ever seen. Imagine a place Birmingham's infrastructure but Dothan's population.

I get what you're saying, and it makes sense. Just not what I had in my head.

Ole Miss is actually smaller than that number. That number includes medical center students in Jxn.

I forget that Ole Miss never had their big city med school be used as a pawn to legitimize local city interests and get spun off into its own university like UAB.

I'm not trying to be mean spirited but Tulsa is legitimately eerie. Its not like everything is in disrepair but it is so empty even at peak hours.

Serious question, did you ever drive to Norman for a game when TAMU was in the B12? Did you never drive to Fayetteville when Arkansas was in the SWC?

If you drive through Arkansas or Oklahoma you would never make this assumption.

Fayetteville was tiny before Walmart blew up that part of the state in the 80's and 90's.

If I can fly private to a SEC event that is great but otherwise driving is by far the best way to really appreciate the conference as you get a feel for the footprint like no other.

Oxford is a suburb of Memphis and Memphis has a university.

Rich kids went to Oxford
Poor kids stayed home

Ole Miss should not have the numbers of say Tide or Vols

Good God, why?

When I am taking a road trip, it is to somewhere comparatively-interesting, like Waco.

It’s 1 hour, 20 minutes from Oxford to the armpit known as Memphis.

Don’t let Vandy’s small numbers fool you. The footprint of the campus is large. It includes 4 on-campus hospitals and several commercial properties adjacent to the campus including a mid-rise hotel and Wendy’s. Vanderbilt also owns many other assets domestic and foreign including an elite golf course and an Observatory. Vandy is one of the largest employers in the State of Tennessee employing 22,000 employees.
