That said, if he goes 16-0 I think there’s an insane booster somewhere who’d offer him $20mil to jump.
Then he would have to put up with the insane booster... he clearly does not readily tolerate bullshite... he barely tolerates the idiotic questions the media throws out before games.

You realize, Indiana has a handful of billionaire boosters.

His age is the problem. He is 64! At some point age becomes an issue. If he was 50 it would be the hottest discussion around.

Besides the age factor, this is the most important point.
If you read the smaller details of his new comp package, he made his buyout provision contingent on Indiana retaining Pamela Witten as University President and Scott Dolson as his AD. He apparently really values the very free hand he has been given to shape the program without outside pressure.
Compare that to the governor of your state getting involved with coaching hires!
He has a pretty rare setup there given his very unique personality that likely would not play well at other institutions.

IU has the largest living alumni base in the United States. Low on Billionaires, but high on multi-millionaires

I mean, is "bigger" still important? Indiana just obliterated Bama and also beat Ohio State in the conference championship. Why leave for a bigger program when you are already kicking the bigger programs asses? I am not sure the old rules still apply when it comes to coaches always chasing the bigger job. He has proven he can win at Indiana and they just gave him a huge extension. He should stay and have his name put up on the stadium.
This is almost verbatim what all the Ole Miss fans assured us when arguing that Lane wouldn’t leave. There is some truth here but I’m not sure a lot of this isn’t a little premature. What he’s built is impressive as frick, but we don’t even know that he can sustain things yet after this class of super seniors graduate. We will know a lot more in 12 months. I’ll be pulling for them to dominate in the BIG though. What an awesome team to watch. When it became apparent Alabama had no answer yesterday, I just kind of enjoyed watching the dismantling in awe.

quote:this exactly. When you hit 60 a lot of what you thought were huge priorities in life become much less so. You think about your health and your happiness and how to enjoy the time you have left. Its just a reality that your perspectives change drastically when you realize you have a lot more life behind you than in front of you

That only matters for his next job. 80% of coaches won't be where they are in 8 years anyway and he has already been there 2, so he can be done with whatever he is going to do by 70.

He’ll be the bama coach in 2 years.
Dream on.
Dream on.
Dream until your dreams come true.

With his age, I think Cig should stay at IU.
That should be his legacy.

His OC/DC have been with him for a long time.
So whether or not he can maintain this success with a new set of players and a new coaching staff is still uncertain…people are quick to want the biggest name without considering if he just has the right pieces in place in this short time and there is no guarantee it will be sustainable much less transferable to another school once he needs to get new set of players and coaching staff.

He is the flavor of the month. Five years from now it will be what was the name of the Indiana coach in 2035.
