Texans think they are unique and have an arrogance that is irritating.

Colorado is a nice place to live, but the California implants are on their way to ruining it. Used to be a red state …

The day Texas turns blue is the day that the Republican party is done and dusted

Mattloc, your perception of Texas is mostly completely wrong though not your own fault. Other than you've been getting your information from a bunch of cult member aggies.
Alabama of all places should be capable of seeing the difference between a program that, yes is very, very rich, and somewhat arrogant, and a bunch of cult member who get what wealth they have from The University of Texas.
Call us what you will, but please stop putting us in the same basket as anm.

I think too many these days don’t appreciate history, and you are right on that most of the defenders of the Alamo came from places other than present-day Texas. Of the more famous names, Bowie was from Kentucky, Travis was from South Carolina, and of course Crockett was from Tennessee. There were actually many from northern states as well. Of those from Texas proper, most were Hispanic; for example of of the greatest hero’s was Juan Seguin who rode through Mexican lines to call for reinforcements, and then back to die in the Alamo. Of course the one thing all had in common was that the left wherever they were from to start a new life, on the promise of free land from the Mexican government who was trying to populate their northern territory. So to paint it as everyone from the South rushed to the aid of Texas at the first sign of trouble is simply not historically accurate. Many were already there and in fact had reneged on some of conditions of receiving the free land grant, such as a willingness to become Catholic, amongst others. All this said, as a Texan I’ve always felt a sense of kinmanship towards the states in the South, and most particularly to Tennessee which is rightly called the Volunteer State due to those who did in fact come solely to help the cause. Of course the blood shed together during the Civil War only served to deepen these bonds.
As for football fans, my experience has been that there are arrogant dipshit a-holes in every fan base, but that there are also the good ones who, irrespective of some friendly ribbing of other schools, represent their own base with class, respect, and hopefully some reason.
As for Texas in the SEC, I personally feel like we’re finally where we should’ve been all along, a great tradition added among other great traditions. I travel fairly frequently for work and when I travel in the South it always feels like home, because the people there are like they are here (save for Austin-proper which sadly has become a liberal $hit hole run by liberal idiots). But honestly that’s not so different than a lot of large cities (I’m looking at you Atlanta, New Orleans, Houston. They actually call Austin a donut, with the libs in the center and all the reasonable in the outer circle.
As for football, I like how Texas is looking but will know more after we’ve traveled to SEC stadiums week after week. The Georgia-Kentucky game last night was eye-opening.

Juan Seguin did not die at the Alamo. He lived until 1890. But your post accurately indicates that there were Yankees at the Alamo. I believe there were a handful of Brits who were there as well.
