obvious bias, but Dallas is the best place to live of the major Texas cities. uptown, victory park, knox, lower greenville pretty much all recent grads of SEC schools +SMU UT OU a few others. (27 y/o Ark grad I live in Victory) Other than deep ellum, all the entertainment districts are quite safe.
I love Houston, Austin, and SA a lot for their own reasons. However, I wouldn't want to live any of those places unless I was settling down in the burbs.

Houston is pretty kickass living inside and around the 610 loop, well, atleast other than the crime. Hopefully the elections take care of the nonsense soon.
Dallas also has problems with civil unrest that we don't have down here, and I love being able to road trip to NOLA for a weekend. You gotta fly from the others cities.

Not true...there has been some crap, but not in a wide spread way. Houston humidity SUCKS and I have lived in Baton Rouge and New Orleans, so I have experienced it first hand. That close to the coast keeps you soaking up AC for at least
half the year.

I would like to eat my way around all the good BBQ joints in Texas.

I grew up in Gainesville, Florida, and I thought it was hot and humid there. Houston tops everything. I was there in October for the World Series and didn't realize I needed to pack for summer.

Here is the problem with Texas...
Person from another state: "Yeah, Texas is nice."
Texan: "Nice!!! It's the best place on earth. A lot better than your state."
Person from another state: "Yeah, Texas is a really great state."
Texan: "What???? Texas is the greatest state. And your state sucks."
Person from another state: "Well, I still like my state. It's not that bad.
Texan: "Well your state sucks. Let me list the million reason that Texas is the greatest state and another million reasons why your state sucks."
Then of course, the Texan starts reciting the two million items on his lists.
And of course Texan has the same drill for your school and your college town.
I've been through this hundreds of times with Texans of varying stripes. Longhorns, Aggies, Bears, Techsans, Sul Ross Lobos... you name it.

I'm on an email chain to support animals who have been treated cruelly. Dogs and cats that have been shot, mistreated, basically tortured.
Texas and Oklahoma come up, by FAR, the most.

Texas will forever exist in the middle ground between not as bad as non-Texans think it is and not as great as Texans think it is

I spent a summer in San Antonio doing basic training at Lackland AFB. That is the hottest place I have ever lived and I grew up in hot south Georgia.
I knew a number of guys from Texas when I was in the USAF. I knew them to be friendly and likeable people. The ones I knew from Texas had attended various colleges in that state. The opposite of Texas people were those jerks, some of them anyway, from California. Regular people are leaving California like it is on fire. During parts of the year it is on fire.
I have driven across Texas a number of times since then. It gets a little barren when you get past Ft Worth. I prefer a terrain with an abundance of deciduous trees.
