Its unfortunate that we do not have a lot of in-state talent.
But that shows Tennessee sells itself, we have done well with recruiting out of state.

UT as a program has everything going for them except for one and that is a large in state recruiting base. It is extremely tough to stay on top when you have to get all of your players from out of state and most of those other states keep their kids at home.
During Tennessee's run in the late 90's early 2000's, they got most of their players from 3 states whose programs were all average at the time: Louisiana, Alabama and Georgia. Now those states do a pretty good job of keeping players home.
UT will always be solid, but I don't see them ever being what they were.....kind of like Nebraska.

They got a lot of kids from California in the 90s too... USC returning to excellence dried this up a little

Their proximity to Charlotte, ATL and SC aren't as fruitful as it used to be. In the last 10 years, USC has had Holtz and the OBC there. That program is way better than it was in the hey-dey of the Vols (1990s). Are they world-beaters? No, but even if they keep 3-4 kids a year at USC and away from the Vols that's huge in a recruiting class. And the Heels now have one of the best recruiters in the business in Butch. Same thing with the Wreck and Paul Johnson. If those 2 programs keep a few kids a class that the Vols historically would've pulled, that makes it a lot tougher for the Tenn program.

Alabama has better talent than Tennessee, but it's not why they're successful. It's all about the coach. Great instate recruiting allows overrated/inept coaches like Mack Brown/Les miles to succeed, but the really good coaches can get it done even when they have to work harder to get the talent they need.

it's a helluva lot harder tho... look through the recent NCs and they all got a ton of their talent in state

How many of Bama's starting lineup last year was from Alabama? I honestly have no idea I'm just wondering.
The past few championships have had great talent from their own state, but with the exception of Miles and Brown, they've all had really good coaches/recruiters as well. How many of LSU's starters on their title team were recruited by Saban? (Once again, serious question, I don't know the breakdown by year)
And yes, it's obviously harder, but not impossible. I'm not sure how many Oklahoma gets out of Texas, but there is plenty of talent and teams without as much instate talent can still compete for titles.

About 40% of it. Something like that. I know Javy, Kareem, Ingram, Richardson, Cody, Hanks, McElroy, Barrett Jones, Carpenter, Mike Johnson, and Justin Woodall were all out of state guys. So are Hightower and Robby Green.
