Our president of the university in 1889 at our first field day seen daisies on campus that were the colors orange, and the pedals white. That’s a simple explanation of where it sprouted

I always said that it was to be visible on the side of the highway while they pickup trash on work-release.

Texas was playing a baseball game against Southwestern University in Georgetown, TX in 1921. Students and fans chartered a train to attend the game. They decided to decorate the train with bunting and went to a local store to buy the cloth. The only colors in stock that were sufficient to decorate the train were orange and white, so that bought that and decorated the train. Eventually The University adopted orange and white as school colors after an election among the student body, beating out gold and white and maroon and orange.

A not true legend. The University patented the shade of orange in the 1930s. The sports teams used various shades of orange until Darrell Royal standardized the shade we use in 1957. The color to hide the football was made up by Jess Neely at Rice.

Texas got their colors by someone wiping their arse. Is it brown is it orange???

In 1889 Charles Moore, president of the university’s Athletic Association, chose the colors for the first field day (April 12) that was sponsored by the Athletic Association. He chose the colors of a flower that grew profusely about the campus—the American daisy—choosing the yellow orange of the center of the daisy and the white of its petals as the school colors of orange and white. In the same year, the baseball team chose red and black for its team colors. In 1891, at the Sewanee football game, students made an effort to wear orange and white. But in a parade for Governor Bob Taylor soon afterwards, the cadets wore blue and white.
In 1891 the student body voted to adopt orange and white as the school colors. Two years later an effort to change the colors was made. Students voted to drop orange and white as the school colors, but no other combination was found that was satisfactory; the students again voted for orange and white.

I am probably an anomaly for an OU fan but I actually like both Texas's and Tennessee's shades of orange. Both are unique.
Actually think women look pretty good in burnt orange.
That said, the bright Oklahoma State orange is repulsive. If you're going to go orange don't go pumpkin orange.
All that said, what is the story behind the more yellowish shades you seem some fans wear? Tennessee orange does have more yellow in it but some fans wear what I would say is more yellow than orange. I think maybe I have seen some older Tennessee uniforms that had more of that shade.

I don’t think it was the president but rather a player.

It’s actually really difficult to get the correct color. The most yellow ones were a mistake by Adidas back in the day. Our orange looks and photographs very differently depending on the light. You can take the same material and swear it’s three different colors depending on how it is lit.
Our orange should look like an actual citrus orange. Very bright but not fluorescent and not a lot of red. If you were color mixing the red would be red plus white then yellow.

Prison orange has far too much red in it. It’s closer to Florida orange. (Pantone 172. We are Pantone 151). Also, Knoxville puts inmates in Crimson.

Thanks for the info. Always wondered that. Not asking to be critical.
OU has been a lot better the last 20 years but 30+ years ago there was no quality control whatsoever. People wore anything from apple red to almost maroon. Our basketball uniforms and floor back then were nowhere near crimson. Our current AD cleaned all of that up when he arrived in the '90s. He also got rid of the various alternate interlocking OU's. The preceeding AD's were clueless about branding (and football).
My girlfriend who is not a college football fan, bought me and my son matching "Sooners" shirt that are about the color of Miss State or A&M. I wore it at home watching our Houston game. She's sweet and tries but I am not wearing that out in public.

The shift from Adidas’s and Nike’s orange is significant. And Dooley/ Jones/ Pruitt tried changing it a bit along with the uniforms.
The official color is Pantone PMS 151.

Yeah when colors veer from primary colors it can get difficult for people unfamiliar with them. At least she tried though!
Then with things on the red (orange) spectrum half the population is apt to be a little bit color blind. Even if they can make out the color, they may not be able to distinguish the shades and other differences. So Texas, Florida, and Tennessee all look alike and OU, UGA, and State all look alike to a lot of people (some bc they haven’t paid too much attention and others bc they literally can’t see the difference).
