As usual, Saban plays the long game. After fifteen straight years of losses the pain had started to wear off for the Vawls. So Saban, masochist that he is, let them have a win in a season that he knew we weren't going anywhere anyway, just to restore that hope and get them emotionally engaged again. Then he even spotted them a 13-point lead not once but twice this year to really amp them up and get them believing.
Then he no doubt snickered evilly, lowered the boom, and crushed their souls - and they have not taken it well. This has been the most fun win over them in a decade or more.
