That game against UGA was the actual National Championship

No it wasn’t. I hate it when people say this.

OSU lost the most important game of their regular season which forced them into the semifinal against UGA in the Georgia Dome. In fact, they got demolished in the game against UM. It wasn’t even close. They only got into the playoff because of their overblown Bama-like reputation.

You have no idea if they would have beaten TCU. TCU may have very well schemed against them as well as they did against UM.

ETA: Dang, just realized lowhound posted a video of this story on the first page. Sorry for the double post.

quote:

Dykes is a protégé of Mike Leach, a coach known for poking fun at those who steal signals

BTW, for those younger or unfamiliar:
quote:

During pregame warm-ups of the 1999 Red River Showdown, an underhanded script outlining OU's opening offensive plays was spotted on the field by one of Texas' student assistants, who scooped it up and took it to Longhorns defensive coordinator Carl Reese. To the heavily favored Longhorns, it seemed as if they'd caught an enormous break.

It was a fake, part of a plot hatched by Leach, the Sooners' offensive coordinator, and consulted by the Longhorns, who quickly fell behind 17-0 before realizing they'd been duped.

"That game might've been the most bizarre experience I ever had as a college football player," said Ahmad Brooks, a starting defensive back for the Longhorns. "I can't tell you how wrong we were in the first three or four minutes with every playcall we had. I've never seen anything like it.

"It was complete pandemonium, and it was complete confusion."

The untold story of Mike Leach's 'lost' OU play script that fooled Texas (ESPN)

Good on TCU. Still think Michigan is getting too much flak for this. Scouting the other teams signs seems like part of the game. They were just blatant and stupid about it.

If it’s against the rules, it’s against the rules. Michigan is fricked here.

I seen to many of you guys saying this … it’s not their fault they won the playoff game it just proves they were worthy … if you want to gripe that’s fine but your griping at the wrong team . Their stud rb was hurt and UGA wasn’t losing to anyone last year … yes the score may of been closer but the reg season has to matter a 12 team playoff will determine a true champion imo …

Wait, what?

UGA was getting torched until Harrison went down.

Anyone who watched TCU last year or looked at their analytics knew they had no business on the field with elite teams last year.

Yeah, that's genius to not only change your signals, but use it against the other team. I can't even imagine how difficult that must've been to implement in such a short period of time.

it's easy - you have three assistants signal in different signs, all the while, running a sub WR into the huddle with the real call

and/or jumble that up with the sub WR informing the QB the real call for the current play was the one signaled in by the true signaler

and if your sub is only whispering fakes for show in the huddle, you also have the usual sideline signaler being one of the two signaling in fake signs, while another assistant or backup QB is signaling in the real calls

Alabama finished fourth in the SEC last year but think they should have been in a 4 team playoff.

I think it’s safe to say Harbaugh is a chode. Couldn’t handle being mediocre so he decided to steal signs.

Bama derangement syndrome still alive and well for some of you I see. Thread has nothing to do with Bama, no Bama fan even mentions Bama, yet at least two of you are in here absolutely melting all over this TCU/Michigan thread screaming about ... Bama. Seek help friends.

Here's a novel thought: let QBs call plays the way they did back in the old days.

I read the same thing on Outkick. It never made sense to me how Michigan lost to TCU, especially after watching them get destroyed by Georgia, but this helps explain it.

Patriots long history of stealing signals.

2001 Rams - coaches/players constantly bring up the fact that they saw the Patriots video tape their walkthrough of the superbowl.

2004 Eagles - Steve Spagnuolo says that during the game, legendary DC Jim Johnson was SCREAMING "THEY KNOW OUR SIGNS!!" over the headset during the superbowl.

2007 Giants - Revenge of Steve Spagnuolo as his Giants team shut down Brady. Spags has said that he had two sets of signs to confuse the Patriots offense. The rest of the NFL caught on and the Pats couldn't win another title for a decade.

Pats were caught video taping other teams in 2007, Josh McDaniels was caught doing it with Denver in 2010, Pats were caught again in 2020.

Reminds me of the story Leach told about the fake play script he left for Texas and he ran the exact opposite plays to counter the fake script.

The ESPN article about this is a great read also. One of my personal favorite random CFB stories and is peak Mike Leach. He is missed.

E: I should have read the rest of the thread, see it was posted later on

This is probably the greatest Mike Leach story of all time.

bullshite read his your little Bama
Friends post claiming the title game was so bad because TCU was there …. Maybe just maybe UGA was just that good … Bama lost to LSU who actually was down worse to UGA than them TCU was before UGA pulled out starters …. Bama wasn’t winning a pillow fight vs UGA let alone a playoff game … to even assume Bama should would have played it close it beyond pathetic . Bama has zero right to play so stop acting as if you was the team that would have made the game a close one becuase it wasn’t happening vs no one .

The story about the 2001 walk through has been totally debunked. The Pats were stealing signals, as were many other teams hence the memo from the NFL to knock it off. The walk through story was shown to be false.
