Hundreds of examples out there be these two stand out to me. Any thinking person cannot square these two calls against each other. One, the offensive player is knocked unconscious and is ruled not targeting. The second, the defensive player hits the other in the stomach and is ejected. I get player safety and I'm 100% for that, but you cannot logically say that the one that was overtured protected the opposing player and the one that was allowed to stand did. Such a BS call.

I would argue holding or pass int might be more subjective.

Sometimes it is obvious, sometimes it isnt.

The wording of that rule needs improvement, because it really takes tackling out of football. There’s almost no way to bring a guy to the ground except from behind.

The receiver was running laterally and you have to expect him to cut up field at some point if you’re the defender. Probably why it happened the way it did.

Refs call targeting that didn't happen but don't call half of the holding and pass interference that does

The Sanders hit was absolutely targeting.. He led with the crown into the neck and head and the receiver was defenseless it’s blatant! You just can’t do that.. took them 40 secs to confirm it.

I think the one on Smith in the Texas A& M game was targeting because the defender obviously led with the crown of the helmet. It’s what used to be called “spearing “. As I understand it, that is not allowed regardless of where you hit the opponent.

The first was definitely NOT targeting. The second clearly was. There's nothing subjective about either of those calls.

Lots of people don't understand that targeting is a penalty designed to protect the player doing the hitting, not the one being hit. There were too many players carted off the field with spinal injuries because they lead with the crown of their helmet, compressing the spine.

2nd was clearly targeting as that was a neck breaker hit by the defender. Hope the kid learns how to tackle before he breaks his own neck.

I disagree. It might be poor form and dangerous, but it's not "targeting" as the rule was intended.

Furthermore, we see offensive players lower their head like that ALL THE TIME. If they're going to call that on defenders, then they need an "Offensive targeting" where they call in on offensive players that lower their head as well.

A comment about basketball has ZERO to do with a thread with this title....

Wrong.

Holding is.

You could call holding every play if you wanted

Player safety is not why targeting exists. Targeting exists so the NCAA can defend themselves against future lawsuits.
