He was there is spring (actually was there during bowl prep too.) We did not have a spring game because of construction.

Yes he was hired shortly after the bowl game

He was unofficially brought on before the bowl game so some of what we did might have been from him

You sure on the timing? I thought he was there during bowl prep. I could be mixed up about it though

I think they "announced it" in January but I think you're right, we def knew about it before the bowl game and Anderson didn't coach in the bowl game

That's right. I remember wondering when the announcement would be made because he had been there a while.

Laugh it up, but he's the guy who took Wyoming from 229 yards per game to 475 in 2013. By comparison LSU and their loaded roster (ODB, Laundry, Met, Hill, etc) could only muster 435.

I don't know what about the Christensen hire amuses you. He killed it as Mizzou's OC. He wasn't great as the head coach at Wyoming (27-35), but he wasn't exactly 1-31 in conference games. He killed it as the OC at Utah last year. He left the OC gig at Utah to become the OL coach and RGC at A&M. That's a great hire.

I'm interested if any of you are aware of the specifics about what they'll try to do differently this year? If they can find any semblance of an effective run game, it could be a panacea to their team as a whole in terms of the ability to possess the ball and keep the defense fresh.

My guess would be they will actually try and hand the ball off this year. In 2012 against LSU, Ben Malena had success rushing the ball (12 carries 82 yards, 6.8 per) because it was a good counter punch for what they were doing in the first half. They completely went away from it in the second half and lost (only four carries, one for a touchdown).

He wasn't a great HC, but he ran a great offense as the HC. Good thing we didn't hire him as a DC.

Well crap. That sucks. I remember someone mentioning that earlier this Spring.

sumlin is sumlin. he should have emphasized running the ball more when he had the stable of backs he inherited along with arguably the best OL in the country. but he didn't.

is he changing now? maybe and maybe not. ball control and his type of offense may be mutually exclusive.

Yeah there were times that Kingsbury forgot about the run game. That game in particular would have been nice to keep running the way we were. I'm hoping we see more of a run game this year instead of the bubble screen "run game" we saw last year. Will be interesting to watch. In all honesty though I don't think our season will be defined by that side of the ball.

UF did it for years. MU has done it for years. UO under Kelly was the best rushing offense in the league multiple years. Ubran is still doing it at tOSU somewhat.

Are we conflating spread option and spread run heavy teams with Air Raid offenses again? The apt comparisons would be what June Jones did, Mike Leach, Hal Mumme, Art Briles, etc.

it will probably resemble what Utah did last year and what Mizzou did from '01-'08.

With the way we are recruiting TEs and changing blocking schemes I am interested to see if people still consider us an air raid team in a couple years

Me too. It looks like it could be a slight shift in philosophy. I wonder what Sumlin's thoughts were on utilizing the run more. He's said in the past that run games were obsolete and that you could replace that production in the pass game with more success. Interesting to see him reverse course a bit (at least on paper).

When did he say that?

Mizzou was a pretty good mixture of those two types of offenses when Christensen was there. The sooners were much the same way when Sumlin was OC there. Will be fun to see what it looks like this year.

I've never heard him say run games were obsolete. I have heard him say we need to be more consistent running many times though.
