Do Rantards feel slighted that Les Miles is never on any list?

Not sure why you're laughing, gatordmb89.
If Sumlin ever leaves A&M for another collegiate gig, it won't be because of money.
Again ... this isn't the first time his name has come up for a coaching vacancy; and it won't be the last time.

No, it's good to know that NFL GM's/Owners are not THAT dumb. Miles is a good college coach that belongs nowhere near the NFL as a head coach.

The talent parity in the NFL would make Saban's tenure in Miami look like he was Don Shula 2.0 in comparison to what Miles would do.

USC is actually a great opportunity for a coach. It's still USC, it's still easily one of the top 5 places to recruit at, and the fans/boosters have long forgotten about Pete Carroll after the disaster that was Lane Kiffin. You would be taking over just as the sanctions are ending and could be a hero for a struggling program. Probably the easiest school to win a national title at along with Texas.

I just don't see Sumlin as a realistic threat to leave.

Why not? JFF is leaving, why not follow him?
Those 7-5 seasons post JFF, are not going to go over well in College Station.

I have my doubts that it'll come down to money, though. It's the reason I find the Texas' fans claims of being able to lure Saban away by throwing cash at him so laughable. At that level of money, the coach is going to be absolutely stinking rich no matter which way he chooses to go...especially if a there's a bidding war for his services. After that, other factors would dominate his decision-making process. If USC offers him $8 million a year and TAMU counters with $8.5 million, he's likely to go, "Hmmm...okay, solid gold toilet in California or in Texas? Let me think about it for a while..."

$8.5M in Texas means so much more than $8M in Southern California it's hard to articulate.

But it'll be something like the difference between $3.75M in Texas and $3.5M in SoCal, and again, the difference is vast.

This is one of the premiere jobs in the country when NOT on probation. Losing 20 something schollies kills a program. Saw it first hand. When they come off this James Franklin would be a fool not to take a job like USC.

Exactly.
If (when?) Sumlin leaves Texas A&M University, it won't be resultant of financial issue(s).
That's not to say that coaches don't place high priority on non-monetary factors--we all know that they do.

USC is a better job

Which is true. Cost-of-living expenses factored in, it makes a difference. But my point was more that he'd be stinking rich no matter which job he takes, so other factors tend to take a greater importance.

It's all hypothetical, of course. The article was just speculation from some random reporter. Sumlin might not even be in their top 5 candidates, and if he is, his reasons for staying at A&M might outweigh his reasons for wanting to go to USCw.

1. A&M is rich bitch

2. If Sumlin wants to go pro - stay where you are. You know your team, recruits, highschool coaches etc... and wait it out by winning.

3. Why take on a train wreck if wanting to go pro.

4. He doesn't want to go pro and wants to stay in SEC

5. He doesn't want to go pro and wants to be the man in LA

5 is the only worry.

I think you might be giving too cursory a look at the financial aspect of the decision.

I don't know what will happen. He might bolt. I would just be legitimately surprised, and I try to stay as objective as possible when it comes to the coaching carousel.

Agreed. Sumlin may leave aTm one day, but it won't be because aTm can't match a salary. aTm is winning big, has stolen the show from UT for the first time in decades, and is about to have a 100k seat stadium. They are not going to derail a 100 million a year growing organization because someone else offers the CEO a 1 million raise.

You guys must not know that USC is one of the most wealthiest schools in the nation. tradition, weather, recruiting hotbed, girls. i mean, i could see Sumlin making a move.
