The state of Mississippi has a law that no person shall get more than a four year contract. That includes Coaches,ADs and Administrators. Rest of America should follow suit and they wouldn't be faced with these Gus Malzahn contracts. Of course only applies to public universities.

Yes then your coaches will leave like Merlins just did.

That may be why you cant keep good coaches.

Been in place for decades. Has never affected a single Coach. I think it's fair to both sides.

Mullen just left for a 6 year deal. So you're saying it hasn't affected any coaches?

Mullen left because coaching at State is a death sentence. You can't recruit there.
An extra two years on the contract didn't change his mind.

Mullen could have coached there for the next 25 years (4 years at a time).

You can't evenly divide 25 by 4.

No doubt. State loved him and would have endured several crappy seasons because he has given them hope. Florida doesn't have that kind of commitment to him.

Mullen could have stayed for as long as he wanted with the results he was getting. he chose to leave. With that being said, it's not a bad law to have in place especially looking at what some of these other schools have to pay a coach to fire him. The only thing I would like to see is Mississippi make it a five year deal. That is all....

quote:Yes, it's limited to 4 but it's essentially a rolling 4 year contract. Perform and you get an extension. So it's always 4 years unless you poop the nest.

OP is way off in saying that it hasn't affected a single coach. It affects EVERY coach, at least every coach with an agent. Since 4 years is the max, agents ask for higher salaries and way more guarantees. It's just part of the deal

The state of Mississippi hates freedom

Agreed . We are still paying Les Miles .
4 year contracts are a good idea .
Have 3 years to rebuild and a year to
show off what you have . If you can't be a winner
after 4 years then they can let the coach go
without having to pay millions .

You don't know much about State football head coaching history

quote:Yeah, I can only think of 2 that have gone on to other schools on their on; Darrell Royal and Mullen. The number we were unable to land because of it would be difficult to calculate not knowing what goes on with an AD and an agent discussing possibilities.
