You can only teach a player so much. Howland put them in position and put talent around them, which is all a coach can really do
Well, I would argue that Howland could do more when it comes to in game coaching but I don't think State needs to put him on the hot seat or anything. State is going to get tired of him quick though if he has the type of success he has had in recruiting but isn't able to show more for it.

I think you overestimate MSU fan's passion for basketball. They care MUCH more about bitching and moaning than about on-the-court results. Fans pouting about seats in Humphrey Coliseum has hurt the program as much as anything

What was the deal with Nick Weatherspoon? I think the team really missed him down the stretch because he could defend while giving you an alternative ball handler when Peters was on one of his bad streaks.

The word is he had someone take an test for him during a game and got caught (obviously).

Another word is that a disgruntled tutor is making claims and that Nick won't be playing until a full investigation has wrapped up.
If I was a betting man I wouldn't bet on Nick playing again at MSU. Sucks

Maybe

Normally though, a coach can become a victim of his success in recruiting. As I said, not in any way trying to say his seat should be warm but will be interesting to see going forward.

Sadly, his seat will get really warm if Kermit does well in Oxford. MS is just a bucket of crabs when it comes to State vs OM.

only grumpy old short-sighted white dudes want Kermit Davis. Seriously wtf has he ever succeeded at on a high level? This would be like trading almost stale wheat bread for stale wheat bread.

I'm not saying MSU would want Kermit. Look at OM and Mike Bianco.

Our recipe for success is to get good but not great players who want to work hard, play defense, and rebound. We don’t have success with the guys on the higher end of the recruiting rankings. That goes back to Johnathan Bender and Travis Outlaw who went straight to the NBA.

I think Howland has done a good job over four years. The program has made steady progress each year since he started.
This year I think he coached fine, he put our players in position to win but at times they just did not execute. Simply put our players made some mistakes or made poor decisions at crucial times that cost us the chance to win several games.
So honestly, IMO, the fact we did not go farther this year is on our players. The coaching was fine.
Part of the problem is perception in that we have not made big splash and that the State ladies have kind of stolen the thunder over the last several years.
But overall I think he has done a fine job and the future looks good.

At first the big turnaround was supposed to happen last year, in his 3rd season, and they missed the tournament.
Then this year was going to be crazy good, everyone returned from previous year, lots of upper classmen leadership (Q. Weatherspoon, Peters, Carter, Holman), quite a bit of talent overall plus brought in Reggie Perry...they underachieved in conference play some, still got a 5 seed, then proceeded to get beat in their first tourney game.
Meh, not a great look, much better than MSU is used to doing, but looking at Pearl at Auburn and Wade at LSU has to be hard to swallow considering the success background Howland came from, albeit from a blue blood.
Who knows what next year holds for them. Holman and Q. Weatherspoon are gone. If they can return everyone else, should be tourney or bust once again, not sure if it will be any better than this year's team though.

In essence his first year was a throw away. He had about 6 seniors and 2 freshmen (Q and Newman). Newman was a bust and left so Year 2 was effectively year one as we had Q, Holman and a bunch of Freshman.
So for all practical purposes this year was his third year with the team being completely his own and the results overall were good but could have certainly been better.
But any State fan with a half a brain knows that he has done a good job to this point.

Well maybe just maybe if fans showed up instead of bitching we would've defeated Kentucky and LSU at home. Both were close games that could've swung if there was a good home crowd. But neither game did.

My thoughts exactly. He had freshman Q, a bust and Rick Ray players his first season. And then besides Q he had to get his players in for year 2.
Since then he's improved every season and gotten us back to the tournament for only the 11th time in school history.
All I ask for is improvement and I'm willing to wait to see it. And I see it. Just get us back in the hunt and we'll be good.

Yep, it was sad to see

Howland did alright this year and has righted the ship to some degree. I wexoected a tad more out of this year by not a lot more. Excited to see what we do next year.
We have the worse basketball fans in the conference. Unreal how disappointed everyone always is.
