State folks : Thoughts on Howland?

On the one hand, he took an absolute dumpster fire of a program, got better every year and had them as a #5 seed in the NCAAT in year 4. Hard to ask for much more than that. On the other hand, this year's team looked like a lesser version of his UCLA teams : very talented across the board but never seemed to play up to their total talent level.
Lose Holman, Q and maybe Peters - but return some really good young kids (Perry, Woodard, Ado, possible Nick-W) so there shouldn't be a huge drop.
Are folks pretty happy?

I'd rather have a guy like Kermit that may not be as good of a recruiter but can get the absolute most out of his players. It seems like Howland is way too much of a "Player's coach" sometimes. I've never really seen him get on someone's arse and coach them.

state folks are never happy except when baseball season gets here and then after the first couple of weeks they get grumpy again.
Personally i like him, i'm concerned about his long term recruiting ability. almost everyone of those young guys that are good have strong Mississippi State ties. We need to be able to recruit someone who's dad didn't play at state. Losing Nick Spoon was huge this year. If holman could play defense he would play in the NBA. dunno why someon hasn't told him this yet. I'm cool with letting him stick around for a while but if you know how to convince Mark Few to come coach for state I'm all ears.

Though, to be fair, they did end up a #5 seed, so it's hard to fault them too much. But yea, that team felt like it should have been in the Tennessee/Kentucky/LSU group.

I don't think they were below 4th in total talent in the league. It wasn't a disaster of a season or anything but I expected better than 10-8 in the league.

Yep - I have a hard time believing they will have too many teams with a roster that talent diverse and deep going forward, which would make this season pretty frustrating.

I appreciate Coach Howland and thank him for doing a fine job. It's not really his fault that Lamar Peters is a functioning moron. You can only teach a player so much. Howland put them in position and put talent around them, which is all a coach can really do
I look at criticism of Howland just like I did when Sherril used to get it. Both of those guys have accomplished far greater things than MSU is used to in their respective sports

Overall, I'm satisfied with how we have progressed under Howland. I think he has recruited well. If we had done a better job in our OOC scheduling last year, we would have had back to back NCAA tourney trips. However, our team chemistry was severely lacking during the SEC season. We probably need some shake up with assistant coaches.

One of the biggest problems is the lack of consistency Howland's teams play with. The point guard (Peters) may look like an NBA prospect a few games and a brick-layin' turnover machine the next few games. Other players the same. I can understand the freshmen like Perry hitting a late season wall, but not the vets. As a normal fan watching there is no cohesive team chemistry you see with veteran teams such as Tennessee. I think Howland needs to replace his assistant coaches. They are not performing and the team does not appear to establish an identity as the season progresses. I think Howland is a good recruiter and knows what the issues are, but he can't get the message to "take".

THIS. I wrote my post before reading this. We are on the same page.

I think most State fans are fine. The general consensus was that we hoped to win the first round game and give Virginia Tech a game - but that 5/12 game is always tricky. Its the fourth time we have been a 5 seed and the third time we have fell victim to the 5/12 upset.
It had been 10 years since we'd been to the Big Dance and we were a 13 seed last time we went. The hope is that we can build on this and make it a habit of being in the NCAA Tournament. There is some talent there.
I blame the 10-8 season on the athletic director at Alabama. The Hump used to be hell for opponents. The reseating killed the atmosphere. They were 10-8 in the SEC and there were 3 games we lost that we dont lose in the old Hump.

So, Howland is the Bizzarro Frank Martin?

If he makes the tourney I am happy. Those are pretty much my expectations as an MSU basketball fan. I just want a reason to be excited during the tourney.

Yea - I think back to how frustrated and pissed I got during the heyday of the Gottfried era because we "underachieved" in the tournament and I want to punch spoiled 21 year old me right in the dick.

Yeah Stansbury had a stretch where he made the tourney 6 out of 8 seasons and I bitched constantly. I will just enjoy things from now on. We are not Duke.

I had adopted this strategy this season with Avery..........but then he took me to the ledge and threw me in the ocean.
