Good call blown by the QB and RB not being able to decide who was taking it. They literally both held onto it the entire play. Conversion if they had just made a quicker decision. O-line did it's job.

I think it was an OK call, but Emory rode the RB too long. You have to make your decisions quicker at the goal line.

Agree - in that close to the goal line some of the stuff that Florida was gashing us with due to great spacing (the speed options, some of the quick hitter run pops) are much less effective. When you don't really trust your QB to roll out and make the right decision/put a perfectly placed ball in on the run, your options from the 3 yard line are much more limited.

Emory probably should have just handed it here, but we defended it relatively well. Sanders was going to crash on the RB anyway because he had Battle on his outside shoulder to takeaway the keep, and HTT was currently free in the middle with 2 DTs still holding up.

The best decision would have been the quick give, but it wasn't going to clearly be a score if he had. It was probably the best disciplined play by our defense of the entire 2nd half. Which is sad, but I guess if you are going to pick a play to do right, it'd be that one.

You aren't wrong about the ages, but Mullen has been coaching against Saban for basically the entire Saban era.

2009-2017 at State, 2020 and 2021 at Florida.

No, sorry, Saban has been a college head coach since 1995 and 1 year earlier at Toledo (not including NFL) and needed the better talent base at LSU to win his first natty in 2003. Florida has advantages in recruiting that Mullen has never had before. It will be Mullen and Smart fighting it out for years unless Smart goes to Alabama after Saban retires. Mullen has a shot to win some natties, maybe even before Saban retires, though that will be tough. Saban is, after all, the best ever.

I mean, yea, but we're talking about Mullen's career, and it's been entirely during Saban's era at Alabama.

He will still be around when Saban finishes up, but he'll be in his mid-50s and probably getting towards his last 5-10 years at that point. But even with that, he's been 1 drive away from beating Alabama for 2 straight seasons. I don't think it's crazy to think he could get us before Saban retires at all.

Mullen is a great coach. He had MSU in the Top 5 nationally. He will do very well at UF if UF gives him time and resources to build his program.

I would agree. I never thought he was a bad coach. I am still wondering if he is as good as some on here believe though. He did a heck of a job yesterday, though. Held the team together when it would have been easy to fold the tent up and give in to a beating.

Florida looked really good.

I was screaming at Pete Golding the whole game to go Odd front and put three big bodies at the LOS...Most times we were in Even with 2 tackles and 2 LB types and got pushed around something awful.

Make Jones throw the ball which is not his strength. Mullen knows how to move the ball on Bama it seems.

Kirby has led bama for like 80% of the quarters he's played against them over the 4 years that he has

Mullen in year 4 at UF turns a blowout loss into a close loss and now everyone is crowning him

I don't get it.

He's definitely a great offensive mind. I was shocked they ran on Alabama as well as they did. If their defensive players could tackle in the open field they win that game.

The way his team didn’t give up down 21-3 in the first quarter was the most impressive thing. People say he’s purely and Xs and Os kinda guy. Then people are critical of his people skills (usually includes recruiting) and finish with “therefore he’s an NFL coach.”

I disagree. I think he’s goofy as f, and the guy clearly can’t recruit. So he’s bad at first impressions. But, the players on his team seem to really respect him. His teams play mentally tough even when they fall behind. He doesn’t strike me as a rah-rah guy at all, but he seems to extract maximal effort from his players dating back to MSU. I’m not sure this particular skill translates to NFL, and it’s one of his best.

Now that I’m done saying all that, seriously, how is he be so damn bad at recruiting?

he's such a great offensive mind that the only time in his 4 year tenure at UF he's played the actual best QB it was because of an injury and he didn't have a choice

His offensive prowess is wildly overrated and his entire career/name was made by tebow and harvin being at UF the same time he was. Same way everyone always points out "jim chaney coached drew brees!" as if that actually means anythign lol

Dude had freaking State ranked #1 with Dak at QB, who Miles passed on because he thought he was a TE. LOL. He's one of a few coaches who have given Saban's defenses fits. But you be you.

Didn’t they lose like 4 straight after that number one ranking? I also don’t think they played anyone with a pulse before that. Mullen always feasted on FCS teams. He has one of, if not the worst, winning percentage against the top 25 and top 10. Good job keeping it close with Bama though this week,

How is he at his ceiling? Last year he had a passing QB and made the best of it by creating one of the best passing offense in the country. Year later? Now just ran down Bama’s throat with a QB who struggles to pass vs their “best defense in a long time.” He got as close as Smart to beating Saban two years now, and just whipped Smart last year. Mullen is very close, and possibly Richardson is the guy who gets him over the hurdle. He hasn’t had a QB with that kind of raw skill set since we was coaching at Florida last and that guy left after some incidence and went on to do pretty well.

Mullen is a weird guy with certain faults but Florida has gotten better every year under him. How this is his peak is just a narrow sighted want more than holding any truth. Using his record at Miss State and acting as though that means he cant’ win at a substantially better school is laughably stupid. Since he has been here, UF has shown improvement each year. He walked into UF with UGA at top form, LSU having their best team ever in year two, Covid year, and Bama still in Saban’s dynasty. That’s a lot to build up to because UF was not in a good place when he got here. He has since gone to three straight BCS bowls. Now he is right there to being able to beat the best in the game. Now just wait till he has a QB perfectly built for his system in Richardson. It will be damn scary.
