He made a drunken fool of himself on tv in front of millions of viewers. More people saw that than watched the Super Bowl he predicted his team to win, I guarantee that.

Joe Namath.
John Huarte-QB-ND won it. Both signed with the Jets. Huarte got $200K for signing. Namath got $400K.

As well as Namath, Stabler, Eric Zeier, and maybe Tommy Hodson.

But he was a great marketer. had they lost that Super Bowl he would have been no worse off. When they won it made his career, and people still think he was a great QB.
And how about his book:
"I Can't Wait Until Tomorrow, 'Cause I get Better Looking Every Day"
He definitely knew how to turn a buck!

I know I will get a lot of heat and hate from Bama fans, but Namath just wasn't that great in the NFL. His greatest claim to fame was the prediction.
Probably had the greatest release in football still to this day.

Peyton is the only answer for #1.
But Hodson is a very valid choice from further back.

No doubt!! He couldn't have gone to a better city/team in that regard. Broadway Joe has a solid ring to it...Bourbon Street Joe (as an example)? Not so much.

Possibly, I guess. But he just wasn't very good.
Let me back up. He elevated his team. made them believe they could win. Great leadership skills. These are all a part of being a good QB, and from that perspective, he was excellent.
From a performance standpoint, though, he just wasn't that good.

Joe Namath,

Threw 50 more interceptions than touchdowns.
50% completions
65 Career QBR.
Him being in the HOF is a fricking joke.

Grossman got completely screwed the year he was a finalist.

Wow. When I usually say stuff like this people usually gang up on me and give me a beat down. I'm not used to people actually agreeing with me on this!

I agree with both of you. Namath is by far the most overrated player in the history of football. And before anyone brings up his era, Namath was overrated by those standards too.

Overstate much?
He is more famous than his NFL performance warrants, I'll admit that. It probably has to do with his popularity, the "guarantee", and his larger than life personality. He was not a great NFL quarterback.
But he was a GREAT college quarterback, and it's fair to say he may have been great in the NFL if his knees hadn't literally crippled his career.

He was a marketer. he wasn't a great QB, but he parlayed his personality, looks and charisma into a whole boatload of money. If you are not going to be a great player, you have to find a way to make money. His guarantee was that way. He got a book deal, endorsements and yes, big contracts primarily due to that one statement he made.
I have to wonder if he made an off the cuff remark, or if it was a cleverly planned comment made on his part. Either way, it worked and cemented his place in history.

Not sure i agree with that, either, though. His best year he threw for 1192 yards and 13 TD. It was in only 10 games, but that would hardly be considered great even in those days.
He was 16th in pass comp. %
14th in passing yards
5th in TD
So he was very solid, but I would have a hard time calling him great. Keep in mind, that was his best year, which just happened to be his first. he was not even in the top 20 of those categories his next year (1963), or his final year in 1964. He was too busy partying to be effective. I think Bear kicked him off the team or suspended him or something a good bit of the time.
