I'll go with Matthew Stafford

Not even the best UGA QB of the last decade, IMO.

Peyton is pretty solidly the answer here but I'll throw murray's hat in the ring. One of only 2 (I think?) QBs in NCAA history to throw for 3,000 yards for 4 seasons. Set numerous UGA records and has his name on some all-time SEC lists as well.

The thing for me that separates murray from others like stafford is that he just had THAT drive, that gear to win that other QBs don't have. Shining example is the '13 auburn game. Maybe the most proud I've ever been of a UGA player in a loss before.

My pick is Peyton,

I have never been a Manning fan, but he got robbed of the Heisman.

Any other answer to this question should result in a ban.

Did I say that? Of course he is. In my opinion he is the best qb to ever play the game. However, Woodson won the Heisman, his team had a great record that season, and he has backed up the trophy with a tremendous professional career. He TOO represents "everything the Heisman embodies." Not like Peyton lost to Troy Smith or some other scrub.

Is this overall (College + NFL) or only college?

I meant college plus pro.

Then the answer is Manning by an ever larger margin.

I was going to say Murray > Stafford in terms of college, but Murray had +1 year of performance over Stafford in terms of career #s.

However, he owns the SEC record for most passing TDs in career by significant margin as well as passing YDs. Although he threw significantly more INTs (41) than Stafford and Peyton (Peyton and Stafford the same at 33 INTs).

I know I'm being somewhat homerish because I knew the thread would ultimately elect Peyton which is likely the right answer.
Still tho, Stafford is still playing and that allows an upside for him.

Stafford still playing in the NFL is irrelevant to who was a better college quarterback

Perhaps I read the OP wrong. I didn't realize we're talking college only.
I wouldn't have answered Stafford in that case. He only played 3 years and one of those was as a true freshman.

I'd put Eli, Peyton, Shuler, Archie, Couch, Stafford, etc over Dak. Dak was an awesome college player, but there have been a lot of awesome SEC QBs not win the Heisman

Dak was a better college player than at least half of those. His statistics are pretty insane, definitely one of the best SEC QB's to not win it. I think everyone is in agreement that the answer is Peyton, but Dak is definitely up there.

However, I will concede that it's hard as hell to compare across generations, the game has changed too much for that.

those guys put up insane numbers as well for their time. Most of those guys are traditional pro style QBs as well, so of course they're not going to have the rushing numbers Dak did. All of those guys were AAs, however, some multiple time AAs. Dak never made an AA team. You're right, the game has changed a lot and makes it difficult to compare acorss generations, which is why you can't just take Dak's numbers in a vacuum and compare them to past SEC greats

Murray is a better answer. Only Peyton can come close.

Peyton had happy feet. You just can't be a Heisman winner with happy feet.

(only those who were around at the time would know this reference...it was repeated by sports media who suddenly decided that is wasn't "cool" to pick Peyton and tried to find a flaw in his game.)
