Speaking of UNC, are they ever going to get punished for the academic scandal?

Like it never even happened 8 years ago, or however long.

Yes. Ole Miss will get the death penalty.

Actually, the reality isn't too far away from this:
The NCAA submitted the initial Notice of Allegations (NOA), which typically gives the university targeted a period to prepare a response. The initial NOA lists three (3) Level I violations among others. When the time period for UNC's preparation was nearing its end, UNC "self-reports" some further inappropriate shenanigans involving additional - not new - information on faculty leader Jan Boxill, and recruiting violations in its men's soccer program, which puts a halt to the process while the NCAA digests the new information.
The NCAA submits a revised NOA which ommitted references to football and men's basketball violations, and focuses somehow on women's basketball primarily. Still the new NOA now lists five (5) Level I violations. This gives UNC a new start on the clock for responding.
Oct. 2016: UNC responds to the NOA2 by disputing several of the Level I violation allegations - notably the "Lack of Institutional Control" violation - and challenging the NCAA's jurisdiction. The NCAA has 60 days to respond to UNC's response.
Oct. 2016: UNC meets with the NCAA in a rare procedural hearing. Once again UNC's legal representatives challenges the NCAA's jurisdiction.
Dec. 2016: NCAA submits the 3rd NOA, which returns the references to both FB and MBB to the allegations, and also adds further violations such as unethical conduct by both Deborah Crowder and Julius Nyang’oro. Some say the UNC response rankled individuals within the NCAA's committee on infractions. The revised NOA3 gives UNC a new start on the clock for responding.
That 90-day response deadline should be ending sometime this month. Expect a request from UNC for another extension, or a release from them of some other irrelevant impropriety that will halt the process once again....

Coach Stallings at Alabama made that mistake and they hammered Alabama for it.

I live near Raleigh. The rumor amongst the locals is that UNC threatened to make a big fuss about SEC football violations going unpunished if they were to be hammered. I'm not even sure what that means, but that's what people are saying.

Hate to bust your bubble but in a post mortem of the SMU case the NCAA came to the conclusion they would never again issue the death penalty because of the financial impact it has on the community. The sanctions may be long and hard but I do not ever expect the DP to happen again.

You're an auburn fan. Why do you care about academics?

Isn't UNC"s defense something along the lines of it being so widespread, it isn't athletic's fault?
I don't like the idea of the NCAA policing the accreditation of schools though. Not sure how the accreditation board hasn't revoked UNC's membership yet

No. Their position is "yeah, we had bogus no show classes but they were open to all students not just athletes and the NCAA doesn't have the right to determine ALL of our particular class criteria requirements"

No. The ACC apparently is untouchable when it comes to basketball scandals.

UNC is hoping to pull a UCLA where they delay it so long they protect the legend coach and they get hammered with a lesser coach later. UNC has been so smug for decades about Dean Smith and will go to the wall to protect his legacy.

I agree with this.
But even if hammered today, they will give their coach JoePa treatment. But I am NO WAY saying what joepa did was anywhere near what anyone else has ever done. Pediphile stuff is lower than cheating by a long shot.

Donnie Tyndall will get 6 more years added to his show cause. I think he's up to 24 years now.

They did suspend UNC's accreditation. They were recently restored to full accreditation

I think they mean "Tom Albetar".
