In the late 1990s, you could say that basketball was more popular than baseball. That was because we had just won the SEC and made the big dance in back to back years. I think that in sports other than football, success is what puts butts in the seats. Football is the cash crop, so to speak, and even during crappy years, people will still drive to tailgate, hang with friends, and venture into the stadium for games. Just a different animal. I dont necessarily think that we have a poor reception for basketball, just for the product we are seeing now.

You're probably right, and that was before the Tanner era as well. Football can be seen as more than just football. It's an all-around social experience. Basketball is pure sport. No tailgating, no social gathering.

Exactly... which is why people are boycotting or just not showing up. Hard for someone who doesn't live in Columbia to justify driving an hour or more to watch us get slaughtered. Now, say were were even just a reverse of our record and were 18-10, then I think that it would be different.

Totally (see 2004, 05, 06, etc).

I guess I'm crazy for driving down to watch them play regardless

I don't go because of the attendance. Hypocritical of me I know, but the small crowds make it boring.

Yeah this fan base will support a successful basketball team, hence the arena size, hell in Horn's 1st year when we were doing well we had "Operation Sell-Out" and the venue was filled to rafters even if it was against a crappy UGA team.

I went to every football game during the 21 game losing streak.

Basketball is just different. It's not an all-day event. A close game is exciting; a win is always fun. On the other hand, watching your team flounder around and be pretty much guaranteed to lose by double digits against any team with a pulse (including Southern Conference teams) is just depressing. Honestly, when you read the box score you're glad you didn't go. When the team is middle of the road and any game can go either way, sure, then it's still worth going. If you're as bad as we are, with no chance -- forget it. Why put yourself through that?
