South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer wanted to emerge from spring practice with a starting quarterback so that person could provide leadership and a clear direction for his offensive teammates this summer. The first-year head coach has that player.

While recognizing that there’s a summer of offseason work and a preseason camp to continue to earn that job, Beamer said that sophomore Luke Doty is the starting quarterback for the Gamecocks as the team breaks following spring practice.

“Unless something totally changes between now and when we watch the tape, Luke Doty is our starting quarterback,” Beamer said immediately following the Garnet & Black Spring Game on Sunday.

“Like every other position, that’s going to be competition throughout the summer. By no means are we anointing Luke, but he’s taken every rep with the first team all spring practice and I didn’t see anything today to make me think otherwise. He’s great.”

Doty completed 5-of-7 passes in the game for a total of 54 yards. While he didn’t throw or rush for a touchdown, he led the first-team offense on a pair of touchdown drives, which came at the start of the first and second halves of football.

“We’re competing, don’t get me wrong. Luke has to continue to get better, Luke has to continue to progress over the summer, Luke has to have a great preseason training camp. But coming out of spring practice, he’s our starting quarterback and it’s his job to continue to earn that and continue to compete between now and the Eastern Illinois game.”

South Carolina had three other quarterbacks get work in the “game” portion that was played at Williams-Brice Stadium on Sunday. True freshman Colten Gauthier was 1-for-3 on the afternoon for three yards. Walk-on Connor Jordan missed on his only pass attempt for the day.

The No. 4 dual-threat quarterback and No. 86 recruit overall in the class of 2020, Doty played in seven games last season. He went 43-of-71 passing (60.6%) for 405 yards, with two touchdowns and three interceptions. Doty also rushed 41 times for 91 yards.

Wasn't pretty last year, but the potential looks to be there.

Yeah, I don't know too much about this kid, but his 247 evaluation looks pretty interesting.

Projection: 2-3 Round
Comparison: Colt McCoy

Athletic build with muscle mass and no bad weight. One of the more athletic signal caller in the 2020 class, owning the best athletic testing numbers at the position entering the 2019 offseason. An explosive athlete. A legitimate dual threat with a solid mechanical foundation as a passer. Throws a tight, clean ball which leads to consistent accuracy and ball location. Displays accuracy and touch to all levels of the field, excelling in red zone touch throws. Has the ability to develop into one of the nation’s more dangerous runners at the position with outstanding top end speed and a long stride. Can continue to improve arm strength and an aggressive mentality in anticipatory throws and driving the ball with veolcity downfield. Has the upside of developing into more of a run threat in addition to increasing creativity in off-script situations, given his natural tools. Projects as a high level Power 5 starting quarterback with the upside of developing into a NFL Draft pick.

Transfer QB Jason Brown actually looked really good yesterday. Him and his teammate that transferred here with him, 6'8 WR EJ Jenkins, have played fb together since middle school. It was like they could read each other's minds. Liked what I saw out of both of them.

Doty has a lot of potential. Just still kinda rough around the edges in some areas. Major improvement from what we saw out of him last year, tho. And anything would be an improvement over Collin Hill.

I thought Brown looked 100 times better than Doty. Not sure why Beamer is rushing this decision

IMO, he's doing it now to keep Doty from transfer portal. If Doty loses the job in fall camp he's still at SC for 2021 season.

I wasn't a huge fan of his last year but I guess we'll see. Just not opening up the season with Muschamp on the sideline is good enough for me.

That is the new reality. I seriously doubt that Fisher names a starter at A&M until a few days before the season though most know who it is going to be. Have to keep the loser from transferring so they can back up the starter while others get more experience to deal with the loss the following Spring

That's all the time. We could put Jesus in as QB for the Garnet team and God in as QB for the Black team and our fans would bitch bc Satan wasn't getting reps.

Bentley was soft but he was a much better QB than Collin Hill could ever hope to be.
