Wanted to see my Bama brethren’s take on this.

Dennis Dodd of CBS the other day tweeted this big long spiel on how the 24-team playoff was actually a great thing. I’m not going to go into great detail, you can track it down if you’re so inclined, other to say at the end he predicted it would go to 32 within the decade with that revenue going exclusively to the players.

Someone gave him a response that IMO was as on target as if he’d been using a telescopic rifle scope: “You sound like someone who covers college football, not someone who loves college football.”

Thoughts?

People will eventually quit giving or watching.

I don't think they will. At least not for a long while. I watched some Netflix thing on Norm Macdonald last night and I thought his description of why gambling is so addictive was fascinating and sort of applies to being a sports fan too. You're addicted to the feeling of hope, and unless you can get that feeling another way it's hard to let it go.

I don't gamble, but there are plenty of things for people to gamble on besides college football.

College football is just not a good product. There isn’t enough talent to spread it out like it has been with unlimited transfers. The quality of ball is way down at the top end but I suppose there are more okay teams.

I have not really been locked in on Saturday’s this year. I’ve missed probably the vast majority of the snaps Alabama’s taken either due to other commitments or disgust in the product I’m being served. And as my interest in Alabama wanes, I’m not really saying “oh boy I want to watch the Auburn-Georgia game instead!” I’m just going and doing something else altogether because who gives a shite about the rest of the “national survey” when you barely care enough to lock in on your alma mater’s game.

I probably spend more time bitching about how something sucks shite in college football than watching games in 2026. So I am really reevaluating things because I enjoy red zone sundays much more. Better ball, better officiating, just a better overall product.

That's not even close to the point. Gambling is just a means of a person giving themselves a sense of hope and anticipation. Just like the start of a new football season brings with it a sense of hope and anticipation, and every game during that season brings that feeling too, and that feeling is what people love so much. So people will keep coming back until they can get that feeling elsewhere or decide to let it go.

i still love college football but it's more like a cousin i havent seen in 10 years. up until recent years, it was more like a child or spouse that i love with every part of me. not sure how much longer the cuzin will hold space.

If they expand it to 36, we may have a shot at making it if we keep CKD longterm.

So, I guess I’d be for that.

Ok then.

Because I no longer live the lie that College football is an amateur sport. I'm perfectly fine with this playoff.

For the anti's...

The regular season will still matter. We'll still hate losing to the likes of Tennessee, Auburn and LSU. It'll still suck as bad as it always has. It just won't be the end of the season anymore, that's all.

Let's pretend for a moment that next year, we're a straight up, legit contender. The real deal. Maybe we lose one game to an elite team, and we drop two more because our quarterback is out. 9 and 3 at worst.

Well, once the playoff rolls around and we have our QB back, we're legit again, and probably the only thing we've lost is a first round bye, or whatever.

More football. High stakes football at that. Most of it great, some of it not. But no matter what, we'll get spoilers and upsets and tons of drama. That shite will be fun man.

On its face, I've got an open mind about all this and I think it's gonna be alot of fun.

You're right, they won't.

People will legitimately love this (like me) or they'll love to hate it. Either way, they're watching.

No matter what "they" do to College Football. One thing will never change. This isn't the national, and now global sport the NFL is. College football is, and will always remain a regional, state, and even local sport.

Here in the SEC for instance. We'll still watch every single game our team is playing in, whatever team that may be. And for alot of us, we'll still watch the games our rivals or scheduled opponents are playing in.

Nothing will change.

Honestly, the 24 team is a much better setup for the SEC as a whole with our 9 game + 1 P4 OOC setup. Sankey got bent the frick over agreeing to that in the 12 team era. There's a world where like 2 SEC teams make the playoffs this year because 6-7 teams end up 9-3 and 8-4 after beating the hell out of each other all season.

At least in 24 several of those still comfortably make the field.

You're right, or Norm McDonald is right.

Anyway. No one’s letting this go.

What I was hoping to get comments on was the inference that the people pushing this are not people who love college football.

The talking heads and sports journalists who are against it, are alot like some folks on this board, they're lamenting the past.

Those who are for it. Understand the whole of next season will be big, really big.
