When some kids parents find out that Nijay or whatever her name is got 1.2 million to pitch, that kid that is marginal on the travel ball team will swiftly transition to a girl and start mowing down actual females. From Jaxston to Jaxlynn in a heartbeat

Canady doesn’t have to imagine it. Texas Tech has paid her $2.2 million to do it over the last 2 seasons.

We are on page two and no one has suggested who will be Murphy’s replacement.

It is easy to scream “the coach sucks, fire him.”

But then what?

This is my biggest gripe. I know it’s been ten years but Auburn got serious and hired Clint Myers. Overnight he beat Murphy and had Auburn within an out or two from winning it all.

I do understand NIL has changed the game. It doesn’t mean I think Murphy is a premier coach. Very good, but far from great.

The idea of having an $80 million dollar payroll in college sports is insane.

before the second cbs deal signed after the introduction of the seccg, the acc big 12 and big ten were making around 10 mil a school. The sec made around 8 per school. Then cbs gave the sec an unheard of tv deal giving them 20 mil a year per school. After all new deals were signed the sec was getting 5-6 million more per school. At the time it was seen as massive. Now we have 80 million dollar rosters. Insane how old this makes me feel.

I have no doubt you could coach this Alabama team into not winning a national championship. But I am also not sure you couldn’t coach this Texas Tech team to a championship.

UCLA is the best all-time program in the history of softball. They have won 13 national championships in the last 44 seasons. And Texas Tech went and poached their best player in the portal. They did the same thing to 5 other teams. They might still be in the finals if they didn’t have a coach.

This is Patrick Murphy's ceiling. We can find a lot of coaches who can win an SEC title every few years and nothing else. We're overpaying for what we're getting.

Patrick Murphy’s base salary is $330,000. With all incentives it can hit $530,000.

For comparison:

Patty Gasso’s salary is $2.05 million this year.

Texas Tech is paying a player $1.2 million this year.

There are 6 active NCAA softball coaches who have won a national championship.

Patty Gasso (8)
Tim Walton (2)
Kelly Inouye-Perez (2)
Patrick Murphy (1)
Lonni Alameda (1)
Mike White (1)

Patrick Murphy makes less than all but one of those, but it is very close - $330k versus $325k base salary. If everyone got all their incentives, Murphy would be the lowest paid.

So please explain how Murphy is overpayed. And once again, who is Alabama going to hire who is better? Gasso?

Seriously try to answer this logically instead of emotionally.

Imagine Nick winning 2003 and losing the other 9

That is Pat’s career.

So Nick Saban is the bar now?

Here is another one to think about logically. Over the past 20 years here is who has won the regular season SEC title. I have listed the school and number of titles.

Florida: 7.5 (split with Arkansas in 20/21)
Alabama: 6
Tennessee: 3
Oklahoma: 2
Arkansas: 1.5

So again thinking logically, who is Alabama hiring? The only proven coach who is a significant improvement over Murphy is Gasso. How much will it cost each season to get her and a national championship caliber roster? $8 million? $10 million? More?

Who pays for it?

All they are demanding is the best coach in the history of NCAA softball. Seems reasonable.

For example, you're telling me that over the entire offseason and through the course of sixty-five games, you couldn't teach a single player how to hit a changeup?

One of Alabama’s two home-runs in game one was off a change up.

Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

The # of changeups they've missed, struck out on, or stared at as they went right down the middle this season was astronomically high. Hell, Wells alone stared at at least three right down the middle the past couple of games.

Again, who is Alabama hiring that is an improvement over Murphy? It is a simple enough question yet no one will answer it.

There are 300ish D1 softball programs and I haven't had the time to analyze each team's coaching staff to identify who should be hired in the event Murph hit the road. However, the second I do, I'll let you know.

In the interim, his shortcomings are clear as day to anyone who has actually watched games and doesn't just look at box scores and standings.

Yes, he is gay. (Not that I'm judging that. I have gay relatives. I don't care)
But, Alabama fans love to feign ignorance about their coach's personal life.

Texas Tech has 2 billionaires that started a tech company together. I forgot their names. They're pretty young. Early 40's.
They have stated their goal in life is for Texas Tech to win championships. In all sports. They will have a football NC soon too, I bet. Maybe 6 or 7 other schools can compete against that.

Alabama softball is more like a slightly more clutch version of Florida State baseball.

FSU - 24 CWS appearances with 0 titles

Alabama - 16 WCWS appearances with 1 title

Alabama softball has historically underachieved when it gets to OKC but it's hard to criticize Murphy too much. 16 WCWS appearances in 28 seasons and having one of the top 7 or 8 softball programs in the country this century is nothing to sneeze at
