Darius Slay and Montez Sweat are the big recent ones that come to mind.

Your UGA friend was spouting Richtism's, he disliked JUCOs but still took them.
Kirby is a stone cold sausage grinder when it comes to roster management. He lies awake at night thinking of how to improve his roster at all positions.
Richt laid awake at night dreaming of ways to kick kids off the team and leave gaps in our roster. His best work was a post spring break drug test.

Most JUCO are former high school stars who couldn't get accepted because of grades issues. Their ratings are lower than high schoolers for some reason. I would think they would be rated higher because they are 1 and 2 years removed from high school.

As a whole, juco transfers are generally over-rated.
The exceptions are often P5 football players who go JuCo and come back P5.

Leonard Floyd was pretty good. Spent a year at Hargrave Military Academy.
I think he did ok for Georgia.
Hargrave is grades 7-12.5
It isn't a juco. Floyd didn't use any college eligibility there.

Martrell Spaight was a tackling machine in 2014 for us and led the SEC in them. Sebastian Tretola was another good one, won the Jacobs Blocking Trophy. There have been some duds as well. From what I've noticed it seems a lot of them have quite a bit of talent but are missing something else which is why they went to JUCO in the first place.

JUCO guys if you have a bad team or your roster is severely deficient can provide a solid stop gap while you fill the ranks again with the problems with your roster. That said, you can never get overly dependent on JUCO talent or players. These players often don't have many years to play yet they take a 3/4 players spot so they often times have limited value and sometimes they come in and can't even crack the starting lineup meaning their value is depth at a position where you want rookies and younger guys to fill those positions to improve your future. If we sign a Juco I would like the Juco to be very talented or fill a position of absolute need. If your just going after JUCOs non stop and signing 4/5 a year your probably going to have a bad time.

Our best JUCO guys were sign and place.
Sheldon Richardson and Markus Golden come to mind.

Richt used to take JUCO's to get warm bodies to fill out the roster. That's why your UGA friend is conditioned to not care.
NT Chris Mayes was probably the only standout JUCO that Richt ever got.
When you start getting the top JUCO's, like Kirby is starting to do, it really is great, and they really do matter.

Ok, so he went the prep school route. I just remembered he was committed in 2 different classes.

For all the crap he got, Jamarcus King ended up being decent for us the last few years

JUCOs are nice stop gaps to fill holes from poor recruiting, injuries, or too many guys leaving early. If you built your team around them then you're building to collapse and won't keep it up (see KSU).
