The only regret that I would have as a Tennessee fan at this point in time in not hiring Leach is the PR bump that he undoubtedly gives any program. I think Tennessee would have benefited greatly from the hire in that regard. But field results are all that matter at the end of the day.

This. Leach hasn’t had long term success anywhere and that isn’t going to change in the SEC.

To be fair, MSU has different expectations so maybe it’s acceptable to be consistently decent, always a threat on Saturday, and challenge for the west every so often.

Hell, Moorhead going 14-12 with two Egg Bowl wins would usually make you a hero in Starkville. Mullen raised expectations to 8-9 wins per season.

Tennessee is right to think they should eventually be a contender again. They have the facilities, budget, fan support, etc

Rich Rod or Dana Holgorsen type of hire imo. Quick, moderate success then tanking after 2, 3 years after everybody figured you out.

I said it before and I’ll say it again, Leach at Tennessee would have beaten Alabama. Pruitt will not.

Miss St might have more talent and better talent base than Tennessee

Don't the vols have better recruits than Mississippi State though?

2015 Vols were #4, MSU #18
2016 Vols were #14, MSU #28
2017 Vols were #17, MSU #24
2018 Vols were #21, MSU #27
2019 Vols were #13, MSU #24
2020 Vols were #10, MSU #28

Pruitt had way more to work for as a "base" than Leach, no?

Leach wouldn't fit well in Knoxville. Starkville is the best fit in the country for Leach.

I have always thought that his quirkiness would fit in well in Morgantown.

IMO it would have been fun but not sustainable, much like everyone else is saying

I am happy with the direction under Pruitt

If in doubt, always go with defense.

LSU is a victim of being over hyped and losing so many players from last year.

Even with all that they lost only by 10. State did a good job of taking advantage of a very young LSU team. They are looking at a down year of 8-4/9-3. LSU is bound to have a down year especially off of a champ team.

People are going to suck Leach off for a while, which is fine. The dude is a ball to have in the SEC. Clearly he found some things that worked and took out LSU and knows what he is doing overall.

But, in 20 years of coaching, he still has only won 10 or more games twice. And his division ONCE. And his conference ZERO times. He's had ONE top 10 finish.

Let's see what he can do in the coming weeks.

we could debate this all day but honestly I am not so interested in UGA or UA fans opinions as I am UT fans opinion as to if they feel it was a bad decision to kill the Leach deal

Fair enough. I'll bow out.

Yeah, how many other coaches have finished in the top 10 with a team ranked in the ~50s in recruiting like Wazzu I wonder?

And now we'll get to see what he can do when he has more than one 4 star on the team.

Lol what? He averaged 8.5 wins a year at Texas Tech over a 10 year period with an average recruiting class rank of 47. What’s you definition of success at Texas Tech?

7-5 (2)
8-3 (3)
9-4 (4)
11-2 (1)

It’s like he hasn’t been a coach anywhere else to draw expectations from.

Iirc Graham Harrell and Michael Crabtree were his only highly touted recruits at TTU as well. Tough place to recruit to, though not as much as WSU

Yeah, it's not like Texas Tech has been a total dumpster fire since our fricking stupid administration fired Leach or anything. It's not like after Leach took us to 10 straight bowl games we have only gone bowling a few times in the past decade.

I really don't have any problem calling Leach to Starkvegas the perfect fit. If I was in the west and can't recruit with the big boys, player for player, this offense gives you a punchers chance. And every so often it will get an LSU. Leach and Kiffin are 2 guys that get the fan base excited and players will want to play there. Seems I recall even Tennessee fans burning mattresses when Kiffin flew the coop. The state of Mississippi and the wild west has been energized with these 2 hires.

The last point I would make is that Leach would have had a lot more talent in Knoxville had they followed through. Tennessee type talent would have made Leach a lot harder out and much more daunting. Something that he has never experienced as a head coach.
