yes. it's definitely illegal to block the plate in college baseball before receiving the ball.

blocking the plate w/o the ball

I hate the rule but the overall ruling of safe was correct (even though he called him safe not due to the block)

LSU fans almost all say it was illegal. That should clear it up for you.

not arguing that the ruling was incorrect or anything against you at all but what do they think the dude is supposed to do- jump in the air to get out of the way or put himself in a shitty position to catch and tag? like you, i hate the rule, it totally screws the catcher/defense.

2 things

-1 you can block the plate without the ball if the ball gets to you before the runner. Last night it was extremely close. Seemed to be contact at the same exact time.

-Standing with you leg in the line may not be "blocking the plate". Blocking the plate when I think of it is the catcher dropping to a knee with you foot, ankle, shin and knee on the ground. I'm not sure what he did last night is considered "blocking the plate".

I thought it was a great play by the catcher for an out. To me he seemed to be positioned to the right of the line while the ball was in flight then quickly shifted upon receiving it. We caught a break, should've been out.

yeah, and honestly i have no dog in the fight at all. good luck to both teams going forward but as a former catcher i just don't like the rule.

I'd go Lynch out of the two QBs. Hard to pass of Doctson or Coleman though. If want a wildcard at RB I like D Washington for Raiders.

I caught a year , runners like to try to run my 154 pound self over, I would drop down in my low middle line backer stance and explode upward and hit them square in the chin with the mitt and ball , They only tried that once and the rest didn't want no part of me ,oh! for the good ole days !

first off, i'm a girl so i know this makes me weird but i got pulled off of second base for having a totally shitty game and put at catcher. i was mortified at first but then developed a love for it because i was pretty much the only good female catcher in my town and at that point i was probably one of the few good catchers in the state (as usually the pitcher would come in and take over when it came to a runner coming into the plate). anyway, i didn't ever try to pound anyone hard or initiate extra contact but i didn't back away either.

i personally don't think there's a more exciting play in softball (or baseball) than tagging a player out at the plate and raising your glove up to show you've still got the ball.

Wrong, we just understand the rules and clearly you don't...

You can not block the plate when the ball is in the air...end of story...

The rule needs to be you can't block the plate at any time...

If he has the ball then it is NOT block the plate.

if he doesn't he has to get out of the way.

Why can't they just pick one or the other for the rule?

either you can block the plate (ball or no ball) and runner can run them over

or

no blocking the plate at all

Wrong. As long as the ball beats the runner you are good.

No thats stupid. Thats like taking away punts in football because of injuries.

No.

By the rules of baseball, a runner has the right to an unobstructed path to a base. However, this right is not granted if the fielder guarding the base possesses the ball or is in the process of catching the ball.
