Announcers didn't seem to think so. Many saying it was illegal.

I like it better if it was legal. So Florida can cry more

If that isn't blocking the plate I don't know what is. Old school he would have never held on to the ball. They need to just change the damn rule back to the way it was. So tired of this pussified nation and sports world we live in now

He definitely blocked the plate. Then he got all pissy when the runner was safe. I'm pretty sure when he threw the mask, a tear streamed down his face as he glanced over at the rally possum and new his team was screwed.

He has the ball. Once the catcher has the ball he can block all he wants.

A better indicator would be a snap from a few seconds earlier when he was still fielding the ball.

Well the blocking of the plate in that pic is 100% legal. We need a shot of the ball still being in the air.

yeah but he blocked the slide well before the throw got there. that still shot doesnt really help anything. i dont have a video but it was very obvious on the replay. announcers even said it multiple times.

I think it's ok, he does have ball and it's not like he's sitting there waiting on ball while blocking. An injury thing, LSU usually goes head first there to back of plate. It was a non factor since it got tied in 9th.

If this is true then that is the stupidest fricking rule that I have ever heard of. If the runner can't run through the catcher then at that point what in the frick does he suppose to do. Just stop and throw his fricking hands up in the air and say, "Oh you got me", because he damn sure ain't sliding through the catcher.

Just change the damn rule back to the way it is because the only person that benefits from this rule is the catcher because it is never ever called. The runner is fricked no matter what he does. Romero got ejected from a game and had to sit out the next game because he went in shoulder first into the catcher when he was trying to go into his slide and the catcher so no doubt blocking the plate. Stupid!!

If he has the ball in that picture, then it's certainly not "blocking the plate" against the rules. Would need a video to answer the OPs question.

Agree. the catcher should be the one to decide if he wants to take the hit or not.

The runner can plow into the catcher as long as he's making a legitimate attempt at the base. It's a judgement call for the ump: did he collide to try and get to the base or was he trying to drop a shoulder into the catcher and jar the ball loose.

That's a tough call either way. Definitely has his leg in baseline to home plate before ball gets to him and the slide is going into his leg blocking home plate...but the runner also could have went around it a little better...but at that point could have been ruled out of the basepath. Tough call.
