Houston might be a mid major but Kelvin Sampson is a top 20 coach.

Bama can't pull a big name coach for basketball any more than Auburn can pull a big name coach for football. It is what it is, and a fan will stand behind a Coach as long as he produces.
But when that Coach has had years to build and improve and he still finds a way to shite the bed in games and he turns out a consistently mediocre product while he's pulling good talent AND a top salary, it's time to cut him loose. The Bama Administration cut out the dead weight and took a chance with another mid-major, we'll see how it turns out.

Pitino was never getting hired, Donovan was never coming, and Matta may not be able to stand up yet. Of the realistic options, Oats is a fantastic choice. He may win big, or he may flop. But I like him and am excited to see.

hey DA I doubt any of those were true candidates. Just wishful thinking from Bama Millenniums who think we are BB buebloods. Matta was the only one unemployed and one has more baggage then Bruce has. Lots more

Before this previous week, I’d never heard of Oats.
But I’m not a basketball enthusiast, so that meant zilch—I thought it was just me.
Then when Bama pulled the trigger, I took some time to read about him.
I think he’ll turn out to be a really intelligent hire for ‘em.
He seems like the kind of guy who will fire up the fans, the way Gillispie did for us.
He likely could’ve ended up at most large schools and done well.
And if he doesn’t ... you just move on.
Congrats on the hire, Tide.

anyone is an upgrade over our last two guys. AJ was a great guy who did a good job promoting the program but he was a horrible X and O coach who lost the locker room. Any player who wants to transfer let them go. We won 18 games with those players on the team. Kira would be the only loss and screw him if he does not want to give Oats a chance.

It's just strange so many people are acting shocked at this.
This is what non-elite programs do when they don't have a legitimate non-bum P5 option fall into their lap (Buzz, Pearl). You hope your AD knows the secret sauce to finding the mid major hotshot who has what it takes. Maybe you do, maybe you don't.
Basketball people seem to like him and his style will be fun. We'll see if it works.

wasn't Pearl a hotshot mid major before UT too him. OUr baseball coach was an assistant coach and so far I like what I see

I agree with everything you said.
I think “fun” is the perfect description.
I’ve said it before on this board: I’m *gifted* when it comes to predictions and gut feelings.
Like, I could sit around with some patchouli and a crystal ball and legit charge folks for info
.
This was a solid hire.

Pearl got the UT job by kicking our arse in the NCAAT

Our basketball program is hanging on by a thread. Nobody wants to coach here and our arena is a dump that we keep trying to ‘update’ instead of bulldoze. We have clowns saying this was an A or B+ hire

Lol, I saw that. I'd say it gets a B- at best.
An "A" hire is a proven winner at a major school.

I would run the D-8 to push it over.
For free.
For free.

Agree, I went with B. The risk alone makes it at best a B IMHO.

Agree with you, but that honestly is all Bama can hope for right now. A ‘big name’ that would come to Bama would either be a washed up or one with baggage (and the available ones with baggage have a LOT of it). AU was in same boat with gambles on Lebo then Barbee. Those blew up. Then timing was perfect to grab Pearl who’s baggage could be justified and it clicked. It’s a damn crap shoot.
No one, Bama fans included, should say this is a great hire or bad hire. It’s a hire that a program like Bama makes and hopes for the best. Could be great. Could be bad. But that’s your market

Curious what you graded the Grant hire years ago? Or even Avery?

Grant a B for basically the same reason, though I had concerns about Grant not really having a system and being a cog in the VCU machine.
Avery a C+ probably. Thought it could possibly work but it was allllll raw material.

I hate it that Avery didn’t work out. He was just a square peg trying to fit in a round hole. He is an NBA guy.

Honestly all the stuff I hoped would work did - he recruited relatively well, energy was great, all that stuff.
The stuff I thought would be decent at best ended up just being awful. Sucked, because like you said, really wanted it to work.
